There is no such thing as bad publicity.
I’m not offended to be on the shitlist or badlist or whatever. My fanbase is already small and I’m sure that the readers I have won’t stop reading what I do only because some people think to have the power to decide what others can or cannot read.
However, I suggest to who have made the list to read this: http://www.columbia.edu/acis/ets/CCREAD/etscc/kant.html
I want to bring your attention to the very first sentence
Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance.
What the badlist does is providing a “state on nonage” by keeping minor “Minor”, keeping them in a secure environment with the idea that at eighteen they will be magically able to face the world. The list in its apparent smallness has the same idea behind the Forbidden Book Index or every list in human history that blocked culture only because someone (the government; males; the Church) in power wanted to decide what others should read. And this because? Because controlling what other people can read is a way to control them. It’s saying “I know what’s better for you”. It sounds a lot like something an abuser could say.
It’s “you are a child, you can’t think. Let me doing all the job.” It’s dangerous. It’s brainwashing.
Of course there is an age for everything. It would be better for children not to read of BDSM, for example. But this is why ratings, trigger warnings and warnings in general exists. Some fanfiction sites even block the reader from reading explicit stuff if they are younger than 18. A movie is marked “only for adults”, it’s because children are not supposed to watch it. The same goes with fanfiction, with every work of culture.
(There should be so much more to say, but it’s almost 1 am and I’m too tired)
