Mini review of my first ever Barrecore class this morning! Getting up at 6 was NOT fun especially as I must have been in the absolute deepest REM cycle ever because I woke up SO groggy and disoriented. So pleased I’d put out my outfits and packed my bag the day before and had a good nutritious breakfast (SO grateful for the breakfast.)
SO, Barre is still relatively new to the UK although I know it’s been in the US for a while now. Most barre classes market themselves as ballet-based low impact classes. I was warned it was pretty intense despite being low impact and that I’d “realise I had muscles I never knew existed” because they’d be in so much pain. I don’t usually do classes (I’ve done TWO previously, ha) but I tend to get very competitive and instructor-pleasing and based on my overall level of fitness, was pretty ready for the challenge.
So: DAMN. Barre is hard!!! The warm up had my arms aching (think that was yesterday’s upper body workout) and the majority of the exercises were sets of small pulsing movements and progressions. The lunge set absolutely ruined my legs: I actually did feel a fiery burny sensation different to my usual squat jump burns, and I had to stop and straighten up a few times as I genuinely was close to collapsing. I found the lack of a break/rest pretty hard as it really intensified the burning. I’ve always known pulsing was hard, but back-to-back continuous has pretty much ruined my legs for today!
There were only five of us in as well, and our super lovely instructor knew all of us by name, came over to correct our forms and encouraged us throughout. The personal experience of it was awesome, although sometimes I caught myself wishing she would walk away so I could have a little sneaky rest. We did sets of legs, arms and abs - I found arms by far the easiest as it was pretty much a few pushups, whilst the legs were a massive challenge, despite me training them twice a week and usually finding them okay. I think they’re very happy with the change as they were BURNING alll the way home on the tube and still feel tingly and a bit achey now almost 6 hours later! Was originally gonna hit legs today (after being warned that Barrecore would give me next day DOMS) and double up on the doms for tomorrow but don’t think that’s gonna happen... maybe just a few squats!
I’m so lucky we get free classes through work though, because I wouldn’t be able to justify spending it without, as it’s pricey for a session. The studio is lovely though, and I made thorough use of the products in the changing rooms and was feeling all lovely and fresh all the way home. Super looking forward to my next class, but for now I don’t want to hear the phrase “SQUEEZE YOUR THIGHS IN” for at least a week.
