I’m trying to listen to the Indigo Girls albums that came out when Sam was in college to find songs from them he’d like, because I decided that Sam introduced them to Dean and Cas, and Cas loves all the music, while Sam and Dean have their selection of stuff they like from them.

Also I definitely think if Sam found a song he liked by them, he’d hold on to it, not only because they’re cool but also because their style of music and the fact that both of the singers are lesbians would piss John off (even though he’s not around to hear the music).

I think he and Jessica might have listened to them. After Jess’s death he couldn’t listen to them anymore for a couple years, but I think eventually he started listening to them again, probably starting with whatever their newest album at the time was. And then that, perhaps hearing Sam playing it around the bunker, is what introduced Cas and Dean to them. Cas started listening to their music a lot. Dean less so, but he’d “tolerate” it in order to spend time with Cas, and he actually likes some of the songs and adds them to his music. Of course, some of the songs also make him feel very sad feelings because they hit hard.

Anyways my current quest is to find the songs that would have captured Sam’s attention in the first place, to make this all possible.

The albums that came out when Sam was in college were Become You, in 2002, and All That We Let In, in 2004.

I did an essay on the Indigo Girls’ song “Become You” in my head, but I’m not sure I’m actually up for writing the whole thing, so instead you get the highlights. “damn that old Confederacy” -- that’s what this song is about. “our Southern blood, my heresy” -- taking an extremely unpopular stance.

“it took a long time to become the thing I am to you, and you won’t tear it apart, without a fight, without a heart” -- the tension of being in relationship with someone with dramatically different politics/values/worldview than you. Can you change them? Failing that, can you at least hold onto your own values yourself? There’s an emphasis on thing, this is a pretty conflicted relationship. But the singer intends to use the relationship as leverage, at least to get heard out. (Not the only Indigo Girls song that explores feeling like an outcast/reject but still wanting to have the relationship, consider: “They Wont Have Me” and “Philosophy of Loss”.) “to run so hard, in your race, now you find who set the pace, the landed aristocracy" -- emphasis on “race”, rat race but also whiteness (race/race, there are winners and losers, the idea that equality isn’t really a thing that can happen so you might as well make sure your people are winning), non-wealthy white people being manipulated and exploited by the wealthy whites (those who own the resources) both historically and currently. From the singer’s perspective, it’s not white people vs black people, it’s wealthy against everyone else. The current system is a game most people can’t actually win, but wanting to win still keeps a lot of “losers” bought in. “leave you with the mark of Cain” -- Cain killed his brother Abel. On the surface, a reference to the “brother against brother” Civil War (putting full responsibility on the Confederacy.) on a deeper level, also I think a fuck you to white preachers in slavery times arguing that the mark of Cain was dark skin and somehow that meant that the enslavement of black people was divinely ordained. “The center holds, so they say. It never held too well for me...” -- rejection of moderation (or of being “civil”.) “The center held the bonded slave, for the sake of industry” -- tying American slavery to capitalism, they’re not separate issues they’re one issue. The next line about executions is confusing to me, because it’s written in the past tense but it’s not like America ever got rid of the death penalty, so presumably it refers to something more specific.

Hello!

I’m back, from my holiday break, and glad to say I was able to get some reading done!

I was able to return to Tokyo Ghoul: Re! Eto and Haise are dealing with the goings on at Cochlea. And Mutsuki is trying to stay sane and safe after he was taken captive.

My first Stephen King book! Doctor Sleep! I know it’s a sequel, but I was too excited to start with the Shining. I’ve seen the movie and I know enough about the plot to feel confident to go into it. I’ve only just gotten started, so I don’t know much about how this book is going to go, but I’m still excited to read it!

And @books-take-flight and I are going to try and finish Cress this week! I’m super excited especially now that Wolf’s awake, we’ve learned Jacin’s true alliances, and we know of Cress’s parentage. So many unexpected turns, make for a very excited read!
