The basic function of a sweetening jar is to... sweeten! This spell can be used for relationships, situations, groups, organizations- really anything you'd like to make sweet towards the recipient.

Originally from hoodoo and folk magic, Sweetening jars have been used for centuries and in many different pagan and spiritual practices. Here are some variations of this spell:

Honey Jars

Perhaps the most widely used and known version of a sweetening jar is the honey jar. Many places around the world did not have access to sugar (or it was extremely expensive) for a good long while. Honey was often the main source of sweetness and was more readily available for use in magic.

Slow & Sweet:

Honey is a natural sweetener that undergoes a slow transformation as it is created. The nature of how it moves & flows is steady and slow. Magic incorporating honey will be slower, but the effects might be longer lasting. Sometimes fast working magic isn't always the answer, such as when we want a situation or person to slowly sweeten towards us over time. This is the place and time for honey jars!

Components needed:

Honey

Jar/container with a lid

Casting:

Intention is everything, and all ingredients/components in a spell must know why they are there working for you. Make sure your intentions are clear going into the spell. Tell the honey that it is here to sweeten your intended person/place/thing/situation. Let your jar know that it is the container of this spell and these energies. Set powerful intention as you continue through the steps.

Begin to fill your container with the honey. About halfway full, pause and write out the recipient of the spell's full name on one side of the paper, and the target upside down adjacent to the recipient so as you fold the paper in half, the names meet.

Add the folded paper into the jar, then continue filling to the top, sealing with (yes) intention. Optionally you can light a candle of corresponding color on top of the jar, either sealing it with the wax (if you intend to not re-open it) or just letting the energy of the fire boost the working. You may add as many situations or people into the sweetening jar over time as you see fit.

Remember, honey moves slowly. Keep this in mind, as the energies may be powerful but slower working. Set the honey jar on an altar or in a space you often pass by in the home, re-energizing the jar every time you see it.

Sugar Jars

Sugar is another effective way of creating a sweetening jar. In this method, water is used as a vessel to contain and amplify the sugar. Water is faster moving than honey, so this version of the spell is best for workings that need to be fast acting.

Water is Receptive:

Water is one of the most powerful magical tools available to us. Our bodies are mostly water, we drink it in order to survive, it ensures that our planet and all living things thrive and grow. In combination with sugar, we have a highly effective mixture for ushering in an abundance of sweetness.

How to Make a Sugar Jar:

Components needed:

Sugar

Water

Jar/container

Paper & pen

Casting:

As stated above, intention is everything. Speak your intentions to your tools. Fill your jar/container with water, then scoop in the sugar while thinking about your desired outcome. Fill the water until it is properly saturated with sugar (it should be so sweet you wouldn't want to drink it). Once again, write the names across from each other on the paper, fold it, then add it to the jar. You can even add some glitter for added effect. Close the jar, then swirl the liquid creating a vortex inside. Seal the spell with a candle if you see fit and leave it on an altar or commonly seen space in your home. Swirl it to re-activate the spell.

This spell is highly effective if you are in need of fast acting magic and sweetness, but it may not be as long lasting as a honey jar. Try making one of each for the benefits of both spells.

Sweetening jars are a great way to bring some sweetness/love/luck into your life. They can be used to sweeten relationships, situations, groups, and even for self-love. Basics of beginning witchcraft:

These aren’t anything new or special, but learning the basics is an essential when starting off 💖

Research is everything! Everyone’s craft is different, so relying purely on social media can be counterproductive and misleading since practices can vary and anyone can easily knowingly or unknowingly spread misinformation. There are no specific sites I’d recommend, just simply research as much as possible and pretty soon you’ll have the hang of it! Books are also great sources of information and can be found anywhere including online, thrift stores, book stores, or metaphysical stores. Although many books can easily spread misinformation as well, so always do research on one or an author. Historical books are always incredibly useful.

Witchcraft, Paganism, Satanism, and Wicca are all different. Witchcraft is the belief in and practice of magic. Paganism is the practice of any non mainstream religion, and is typically earth based or polytheistic (examples would include wicca, Hellenism, Norse paganism, Kemetism). Satanism can divide between being purely philosophical or involve the worship of Lucifer. Wicca is a stand alone earth based religion with specific principles and beliefs, and may not always involve witchcraft.

Witchcraft can’t go against the laws of nature. Simply put, witchcraft is just manipulating energies and cannot do anything such as defy gravity or physically transform something.

You don’t have to be a cis woman in order to practice witchcraft. This will make many angry, but your ability to practice magic doesn’t rely on genitalia or gender identity at all. Identifying as a woman and having a vagina doesn’t immediately make you the only one capable of doing spell work, and thinking that energies recognize and care about gender is idealistic thinking.

You can be an atheist and still practice witchcraft. The internet may lead you to believe that you have to worship various polytheistic deities in order to be a ‘real’ witch, but this is actually paganism. Energy work only requires deities if that is your religious belief.

Christians can practice witchcraft! Despite the notion that all Christians are entirely against witchcraft, this is false and there are many Christian witches who choose to work with information in the Bible, Christian deities, or saints. Wanting to practice witchcraft does not mean you must sacrifice Christianity.

Witchcraft does not require you to be Wiccan or Pagan. If you want to practice witchcraft by itself then practice! Wicca is a religion seperate from witchcraft which worships the Triple Goddess and Greenman and believes in things such as the threefold law, sabbats and esbats but does not always include the practice of witchcraft.

Certain practices and beliefs can be closed to those who do not belong to the ethnicity of origin, those who do not belong to the society, or are not initiated. This is not gatekeeping but purely basic respect. If you want to begin working a cultural path but are unsure of if it is closed simply google the origins and trust the practitioners themselves rather than tumblr as we can sometimes get things mixed up. Examples would include Indigenous practices, Hoodoo, Voodoo, Brujería, and Jewish practices.

Spirit guides are amazing to work with and can help your daily life and craft immensely. Some ways you can contact them are through meditation, divination, astral projection, lucid dreaming or just by simply asking. My personal favorite method is through the spirit messages oracle cards.

When using a new pendulum, always first ask which direction is yes/no/maybe and allow it to swing naturally. Make note of which direction corresponds to which answer.

Before doing any type of magic, learn basic protective methods. These can include protection spells, chants, sigils, crystals, and herbs.

Meditation is an amazing skill to learn when beginning. This can help with vital things such as focus, energy, grounding, chakra work, and help set the groundwork for more complicated topics such as lucid dreaming or astral projection.

Befriending and researching local harmless nature spirits is a good place to start off of. This is the safest way to begin spirit work and can be quite rewarding. I would personally suggest just starting with plant spirits and animal spirits.

There is no ‘right’ way to do witchcraft. Witchcraft is incredibly broad and there are practically infinite ways to go about it. Choose your own beliefs, create a practice specific to you, and don’t believe that you have to follow the set path of others. Unless what you’re doing is truly illogical and lacks research, trust that you know what is best for you.

Your practice is your own! Regardless of if you’re new or experienced never forget that you are the one who gets to decide what you do. Witchcraft is extremely personal to the practictioner and there is power to designing your own practice. Sometimes your own methods are the best of all.

These are just a “few” guidelines, by far everything important to know is not covered and continuing research is key. Witchcraft cannot simply be just doing spells at random, there has to be backing so knowing a clear ideology is of importance. Hope this helped!

a red candle to represent your passion for life

a white candle to represent the purity of your intentions

a blue candle to represent wisdom and calmness

a deep glass bowl filled with rain water (if you don’t have access to rain water filtered water is suitable)

This ritual is best performed outdoors or in a well lit, quiet space.

Safe travels protection spell jar. I leave tomorrow for a week long trip with my family and I’ll be driving alone with my kids and I am super nervous! So I created this spell jar for our travels.

Cleanse your jar

Ingredients listed bottom to top

Black salt- Protection

Mustard seed- Travel

Poppyseed- Health

Dill- Travel

Cinnamon stick- Protection

Cloves- Protection

Seal your spell with a black candle for protection

Charge your spell with selenite, obsidian, amethyst and smokey quarts

Self-Confidence Spell

This is the charged crystal.  Obviously you can’t see whether it’s charged or not but hey I wanna show off my crystal okay.

ANYWHO the spell I used goes like this, I found it on Pinterest.

Things you need: 

~Orange Essential Oil

~A Candle (I used white cause that’s what the picture portrayed)

~Rose Quartz

Steps:

~Dress the Candle with the Oil.  I also put some on my third eye area for mental clarity (I read that in a book)

~Light the candle and pass the quartz through the flame and smoke (it’ll be fine.  It might get a little blackened in some areas but it rubs off.) while saying aloud “I am confident, capable, and worthy.” Repeat this 5-10 times or whenever feels best.

~Take the charged crystal with you whenever you need some confidence!  ~Make sure to cleanse it at night, I put my crystals on top of a light bed of salt. I

Cramp relief sigil spell

This is the first-ever spell I’ve made, so hopefully, it is alright. If any more experienced witches come across this, please leave any tips you feel that will help me improve.

This is the spell I made up last night for cramps, specifically menstrual cramps. I also used it last night and it worked very well. 

What you will need:

A green marker, pen, highlighter, paint, eyeshadow, anything you can use to write on your skin to represent physical healing 

your sigil for cramps/ pain relief.

water. you can use moon water for extra oomph if you’d like but I just used regular tap water

Steps:

The first thing I did was make my sigil. The statement was ‘I am not affected by cramps’. If you would like, you can charge it before you draw it onto your skin, but I did not. 

Next, take your green whatever it is, (I used a highlighter) and draw your sigil onto your skin near the uterus area. Please make sure that whatever your using is non-toxic. While your drawing it, repeat your intent/statement in your head or out loud.

After you draw your sigil, mix up you water and salt, then use it to trace over the sigil with the water. Depending on what you use, it will make the green drip away. It did with me, so I used that to represent the pain flowing away.

Let the water dry naturally, and pamper yourself. Periods are no fun and you deserve it. Some of my favourite things to do are get into a comfortable position and browse online, add new info to my grimoire, eat chocolate and listen to Jack Stauber songs.   Try to not focus on the pain, if your cramps have already started although I do recommend doing this before the cramps start because I don’t know how long it takes to start working. 

Also now is a good time to do some self-love rituals because every uterus-and-period-having-person in the world knows that this is a time of feeling like crap. I also know from experience that it can be incredibly dysphoric, so everyone out there who also experiences that now is an especially good time to take things easy and do things to make yourself happy.
