Given all the discussion re: Pesach and black jews, i want to tell a brief story from years back.
I was a helper at my friends' wedding. The photographer, who i had spent the last few days on and off with as we prepared for said wedding, sat next to me at the reception as we let our feet dangle in the hot tub. Feeling we had succeeded in giving our mutual friends their best day ever, we breathed a sigh and high fived, where i noticed for the first time i was seeing him with rolled up sleeves.
"oh hey! Is that a hebrew tattoo?"
"oh shiiiiiiit! Dude thats so dope, i had no idea you were jewish! Thats so cool you know hebrew, too... My family was never able to send us to hebrew school, so i never learned it. Whats it say?"
I was able to see the joy fade from his eyes at my excitement. He told me what it said, in lowered, more direct tones. I cant recall what it was, but after he told me, he excused himself and avoided me the rest of the night and the extra day i was there. It didnt dawn on me until i was back home...
