I’ve heard some cishet people say things like, “I think in 2020 we can all agree gaydar isn’t a thing,” like the concept of gaydar is outdated. And I think that’s accurate to the degree that perceiving someone’s sexuality based on outdated gender stereotypes. BUT while I think most cishet people don’t have gaydar, I think a ton of LGBTQ+ people do.

Note: I’m using the term gaydar here since it’s the most common but feel free to substitute it with things like bi-fi, TRANSmitter, lesbeacon, etc. My point remains the same either way.

A lot of LGBTQ+ people don’t all want to be perceived as cishet. Do you think I wear full makeup and a dress to be seen as a cisgender man? But also there’s a little bit of recognizing something in other people we recognize in ourselves. My ability to recognize that someone may be LGBTQ+ has improved greatly since accepting my own gender identity. I’m almost always able to identify when someone is trans/nonbinary & it’s not based on some stereotypes. I don’t know how to explain it I just get a feeling about them, that they’re like me in that way.

Anyways I don’t know if other queer folks feel the same way but I just thought I’d throw this out there.
