Warning for Brooklyn 99 binarist and transphobic episode S7x10

So, I just got done watching this episode, hoping against hope that something - anything would save it and show that the writers knew what an awful thing they were doing and NOPE. Nuh-uh.

So I’m warning you, so you can skip the episode, if you still want to watch the show. SPOILERS under cut.

They have a fucking SEX REVEAL party for a foetus. I won’t say who just in case you don’t know and don’t want to know, but there is a plot in which a character is pregnant, and there is a sex reveal party, a sex reveal cake, and a focus on the importance of biological family and even reconciling with abusive parents (I know that’s not new to B99, but it’s just the icing on the transphobic, binarist cake).

I kept hoping SOMEONE on the cast would object, or the disaster of a reveal party would make the characters realise that assigning gender to a kid before it’s even fucking born is super gross, as is reducing kids to their genitals, but nope. Doing this is seen as an expression of good parenthood.

It is referred to as a sex rather than a gender reveal party throughout, but then characters treat what is revealed as gender (and, y/k sex itself is not binary).

There are multiple points at which a quick one-liner could have saved it, and they do not go for it.

Brooklyn 99 has never been as feminist as it thinks it is - it took a lot of persuading for me to keep watching it as the first season is in fact pretty damn sexist. But I thought it had got better, with increasing LGB representation, but I guess the T and everything covered under the + is too much for them.

I’m really upset and disappointed. I’m kinda pissed to have not seen ANYONE talk about how shitty this is. So I’m hoping that by posting here I can save someone else the pain and heartache.

I’ll be muting notes on this post as I don’t wanna know the shitty things the transphobes and binarists will say.

I just saw an article about Canada marking all passports with an "x" so that it doesn't out nb people and cause problems in countries that it's illegal, and like honestly, I love that idea more than the whole "get rid of gender markers" but someone commented on how doing that would be rude to trans people because they fought hard to be reconize as their gender 🙃
