Over on twitter there’s a group of people doing a Bird ABC challenge. These are the first three in my series! I’m keeping them to super quick sketches to make sure I can actually finish them all.

What a treat to see that the first trio of my Bird ABC posts from -- checks -- yes last November, over a year ago, are suddenly on Tumblr’s radar, haha.
Thanks to all who came to check them out! I’ve just fixed the tags on the rest of my bird ABCs posts so that you can easily find all of them here.
Here are two I never posted that were done at the same time. I hit 1000 twitter followers for the first time while posting those, and did a little giveaway in celebration. Two people who were both right around being my 1000th follower (it’s always so hard to know who gets that spot exactly!) got to request additional birds, so here is a Palm Cockatoo and a Cedar Waxwing.
The latest batch from the Bird ABCs:
M: Mariana Fruit-Dove (official bird of the Northern Mariana Islands)
N: Northern Shrike (a BADASS predatory songbird!!)
O: Oregon Junco (cute floof bathing in a puddle)
The second batch from my Bird ABCs on twitter! Dunlin, Eared Grebe, and Flammulated Owl.
Finally, the last four from the Bird ABCs series! This was a fun little daily challenge to do, and I enjoyed trying to convey info on behavior and personality when possible in these incredibly quick little sketches.
W: White-throated Magpie-Jay, Central America’s boisterous cousin of the Blue Jay
X: Xantus’ Hummingbird, endemic to Baja California in Mexico
Y: Yellow-naped Parrot, a critically-endangered species (~90% of nests fail due to poaching for the pet trade)
Z: Zone-tailed Hawk, with vulture-mimicking coloration and flight style, which allows it to stealthily hunt prey that thinks the birds above only want dead things
The twitter BirdABC challenge continues!
J: Java Sparrow
K: Killdeer
L: Long-tailed Manakin
Bird ABCs continued:
P: Pacific Kingfisher
Q: Qiliania (an extinct member of Enantiornithes)
R: Red Crossbill (female)
Got a set of four for this BirdABC batch! That means there’s only one set of four remaining in the whole set. Phew! Almost done.
S: Sandhill Crane, widespread in North America
T: Tinian Monarch, found only in the Northern Mariana Islands
U: Upland Sandpiper, a sandpiper that thinks it’s a miniature Sandhill Crane and doesn’t go to the coast at all
V: Varied Tit, South Korea’s cutest contribution to the tits and chickadees (and they’re found elsewhere too, but that’s where I saw one!)
