Earthquake in Russia, Tsunami risk across much of the Pacific (Tuesday July 29th 2025):
(Or 30th depending on time zone)
Tsunami - A magnitude 8.7 earthquake has occurred 80 miles (136 km) SE of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, Russia. A Tsunami Advisory is in effect
This is for West Coast of Canada, I'm not sure where all has warnings or advisories or when to expect any danger to have passed, but I know some waves have already been reported in Japan, and I've seen advisories for Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and BC in Canada, and a Tsunami watch for LA/California.
How big the risk is probably depends where you are: BC they're saying to:
-Stay well away from the water, shore, harbours, etc.
-Await official instructions and all-clear.
-Don't clog up 911 calling to report the quake.
-If you have a boat, move it into water at least 55 meters deep, or stay at sea if you already are (tsunamis build up as the reach shore and are only dangerous close to land).
See below:
Waves are expected to hit Haida Gwaii at 10:05 pm (I assume Pacific time) and Tofino on Western Vancouver Island at 11: 30 pm, but pretty much the whole Pacific coast is under an advisory.
However people in Guam, Tinian, Rota, and Saipan are warned that they should go "at least 100 feet inland, and 50 feet up" with the first "hazardous sea level fluctuations and strong currents" potentially hitting as soon as 2:37 pm ChST (Guam's timezone, it is now about 1:40 there ).
Statement from Guam Homeland Security on the 8.7 magnitude earthquake.
I don't have info for every area, so follow your local authorities' instructions.
B-29 Sky Chief by TK622 Via Flickr: B-29 S/N 42-24472 of the 677th Bomb Squad, 444th Bomb Group, 58th Bomb Wing, 20th Air Force. Photographed in flight from another B-29. Sky Chief arrived in India on 21 July 1944, after leaving the US on 15 July. The 58th Bomb Wing was transferred to Tinian around 22 May 1945. At that time Sky Chief had flown 28 Missions over the China, Burma, India theater of war, and completed 30 trips across the Himalayas, nicknamed the Hump by aircrews. Sky Chief was deemed war weary and returned to the US on 12 June 1945.

Got a set of four for this BirdABC batch! That means there’s only one set of four remaining in the whole set. Phew! Almost done.
S: Sandhill Crane, widespread in North America
T: Tinian Monarch, found only in the Northern Mariana Islands
U: Upland Sandpiper, a sandpiper that thinks it’s a miniature Sandhill Crane and doesn’t go to the coast at all
V: Varied Tit, South Korea’s cutest contribution to the tits and chickadees (and they’re found elsewhere too, but that’s where I saw one!)

Global muscles!
TINIAN, Northern Mariana Islands (April 23, 2019) -- United States Air Force Airmen pump fuel from a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III to a fuel truck at Tinian International Airport as part of a routine logistics training operation.
The C-17 could supply critical fuel and supplies to the island in the event it is struck by a powerful typhoon....which is not unusual! The tiny speck of land took a direct hit from Super Typhoon Yutu just a few months ago, in October 2018.
* * * *
This perspective on the aircraft just screams muscles and strength and capability! And, heck, what an appropriate name -- Globemaster!
About 3,000 people make Tinian home....out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean
