There were worse things that you could be doing as a superhero than sitting on a random roof with your boyfriend.
There were days where you had to face the pressure of saving your city, your state, your country, fuck even your whole planet. Days where you’d have to bounce from place to place to solve a problem, having to forgo sleep and meals to get the job done. There were days that melted into weeks and even months where you’d have to say goodbye to your family and friends to work undercover to stop a scheme, or would be kidnapped and tortured for whoever knows how long all because you are who you are. It wasn’t a job for the weak, and wasn’t something any of them would recommend you pick up on a whim or just because. It was a dedication not everyone had, or would be able to handle.
So yeah, getting to sit on a roof, looking over the skyline of Gotham that blended into a myriad of colours through a soft sheet of clouds and smog while getting to patrol with your lover was one of the better things you could be doing.
Wally was smiling up at Dick with those big green eyes that always seemed to shine even on the smoggiest of days. Gotham’s awful weather and abysmal air quality couldn’t dull the sparkle behind them.
“Please do it again.”
He begged, a twinge of childlike wonder and excitement in his tone. He looked like a little kid, all giddy and happy. Dick rolled his eyes, speaking in an amused voice.
“Really? Am I just entertainment to you?”
He asked, making Wally giggle a bit. The redhead shook his head playfully, trying to suppress laughter as he bit his lip.
”No, baby, you’re just so good at it.” He pushed his hair back from where it flopped over his suit’s headpiece, hugging his knees to his chest. “Please do it again, for me?” He asked in that gooey voice that just made Dick melt. He chuckled, hiding his soft blush behind his hand.
”Ok, one more time.”
He bargained, making his boyfriend smile even wider, if that was possible.
Wally always got like this when Dick showed off his acrobatic skills, begging him over and over again to show how flexible he is, how many flips he can do, how he could contort his body into a pretzel and just roll out of it like it was nothing. When he first started asking him about it, Dick thought (and was worried) that it was some kind of weird, perverted thing, that he was begging to see him bend and flex and twist as some fantasy, but he soon learned that wasn’t the case. Wally just genuinely was baffled and amazed that Dick could move like that. He was so enraptured whenever he got to watch his boyfriend practice his gymnastics and acrobatic routines to hone his skills, sitting on the sidelines of the gym watching him on the balance beam and rings and pummel horse, looking like an Olympian fighting for gold rather than his lover practicing what his family had passed down to him. He would sit and watch with heart eyes and pure shock and adoration as he watched him flip around, begging him to do it over and over again.
And tonight was no exception to that fascination.
Dick got himself back into the position for the trick he had just done not even 5 minutes earlier. It wasn’t anything of grandeur or even that impressive in his eyes, but Wally thought it was so cool to watch (and silly, if his giggles had anything to say about it). Dick slowly bent down and touched his hands to the roof below him. After taking in a deep breath, he put his weight onto his hands and got up into a handstand, using his strong arms to hold himself up. Wally could see the way the muscles flexed and bulged from where he was sitting a few feet away, and was decidedly very (not) normal about them. From there, the acrobat moved slowly and controlled, flexing his body into an arch, where his legs were slowly tipped towards his back. He held himself there for a moment, taking in another breath, before continuing the descent of his legs, arching his back far beyond a normal human's abilities, until his pointed feet touched the ground. With his body now in a bridge, he made sure that he was completely balanced before pushing himself up onto his feet, getting back to where he started, standing upright.
It was very impressive in itself, a move most people didn’t have the arm, core, or leg strength to do, but Dick wasn’t done quite yet, and Wally had only just begun to giggle softly from where he sat. He repeated the motion again, moving quickly through it, folding on himself, flipping over, and standing upright. And again once more. And again. And again. He moved across the roof of the building, looking like he was doing several backhandsprings in slow motion, and his boyfriend’s laughter gave him the slightest suspicion that it looked a little funny doing it. He kept going until he got to the edge of the rooftop, legs dangling off the edge as his spine was folded over his head. He held himself there, the city bustling below him, not even paying attention to the danger one of their vigilantes was putting himself in. After a beat, a moment of suspense wondering if he would fall or abandon the movements altogether, he reversed the order of his trick, going back towards the other side of the roof.
The setting sun illuminated his performance with the brightness and warmth of stage lights, basking in golden light across his tan skin. It’s what he deserved, proper and flattering lighting for doing such impressive acts so casually. Dick remembered a time where he would do things like this daily, performing to an audience of hundreds rather than just one (sometimes a dozen if he wanted to show off in front of family). He would do feats that most every day men and women would think impossible, repeating those impossibles every day like it was nothing. But even then, even in those fuzzy memories, those roars from the crowd never felt as good as the cheers he’d receive from his parents when he was able to land the tricks during practice. He remembered the excitement in his chest and the heat in his cheeks when they’d excitedly shouted their praises at how good he was doing. It was like he was filled with stardust and pure sunlight, his whole body overtaken with that happiness and pride at impressing them. Over the years, he felt things similar to it, like when he would do good with Bruce or impress the league or his team, but they were all cheap copies compared to the real thing. He had started to worry he would never feel that warmth again, that it was just something lost to him, just a memory. That was until he started performing for Wally. While it wasn’t exactly the same, it was pretty damn close. The pure electricity of it running through him when he got to show off. The excitement in his lover made him feel with his overwhelming support for his talents gave him a near identical buzz in his chest, and right now, he was really feeling it.
Wally couldn't stop himself from clapping and cheering through his laughter watching Dick, his smile taking up most of his face. Who wouldn’t be impressed watching the love of their life flip around like that so easily, and purely for their entertainment? He couldn’t help but show it. Dick always loved that, how when his boyfriend smiled all big and wide and excited like that, it took over his entire face. Bright, white, annoyingly straight teeth on display, his dimples cutting deep into his cheeks, the apples of them cutting into his vision with how hard he was smiling, and his eyes crinkling until they were slits he could barely see out of. He was adorable, like a little kid who just got a puppy, or exactly what they wanted for Christmas. It warmed Dick’s heart, sent butterflies straight into his stomach, and triggered his cuteness aggression all at once. He wanted to grab Wally’s face and kiss every inch of exposed skin when he got like that, he wanted to squish his freckled cheeks until they’d be a deep red. He wanted to bite him and leave his mark so everyone would know that he was his (but those thoughts were ones he kept inside). It was better than any feeling he could imagine, and he wanted nothing more than to forever get that excitement and support out of his boyfriend, to make him laugh and smile with his talents. Wally’s enthusiasm stayed until Dick was back in front of him, panting slightly from being upside down for so long.
The acrobat collapsed onto the speedster with a dramatic whine, crawling so he would be draped in his boyfriend’s lap. His arm came over his forehead with a flourish, and Wally knew the show wasn’t over quite yet. Reaching up, he held onto the red head’s face, speaking in an exaggerated voice.
“Look at what you’ve done, made me use my abilities so you can laugh at me. Now, I have nothing left.” He moaned and groaned, curling in on himself in fake agony. “What will happen if someone is in need of saving? I am no use like this!” He arched up, looking at Wally with pleading eyes through his domino mask. “Will you still love me like this?”
His boyfriend couldn’t help but giggle at the theatrics, leaning down and pressing the softest of kisses to his lips.
“Always baby.” he mumbled, staying hunched over. He gave him another kiss, and then another, repeating the action over and over again as he spoke. “I’d love you like this.” smooch. “I’d love as a worm.” smooch smooch. “I’d love you if you never became a hero.” kiss kiss kiss kiss. “And I’d love you even if you lost all your hair and had no teeth and could only gum me.” (Wally still never understood why he asked him that that one time). Dick giggled along with the attention, melting into his boyfriend’s strong hold. God, he was fucking whipped. He returned the kisses with equal fervor, trying to return to him all the love that he received.
“That’s a lot of love to give.”
He chuckled, dragging Wally to his lips so he could lock theirs together for a moment. The speedster couldn’t stop the giggle crawling up his throat.
“Well, I don’t think I could come up with a better person to share it with.”
He mumbled, moving to press a soft kiss to the tip of Dick’s nose.
The two sat in the at for while, Wally perched over his boyfriend lounging between his legs. Running his fingers through the black strands, breathing in his air that smelt like mints and cherry gummies (his tongue was surprisingly red, probably snacked on some while Wally was checking out the area earlier). After a beat, however, Dick spoke up in a soft voice.
“I’d love you all the same too, y’know.” He breathed, grabbing one of Wally’s hands and kissing it tenderly. Even through the suit, he could feel the softness and warmth behind the action. “I’d love you even if you weren’t a superhero, and you couldn’t even run a full lap around a track field.” He added, smiling softly to himself. His lover could feel how genuine he was being, albeit a little silly. He smiled, pulling Dick into another kiss, one filled with so much love and passion and care.
“Of course I know, baby.”
He mumbled, pressing one final peck to his lips before sitting up. The other smiled up at him, eyes melting shut for a moment of pure bliss.
“Good.”
Was all he said.
They knew. Of course they both knew. How could they not know when they got to experience it every day?
As they melted into each other once more, a voice came crackling over their coms.
“I hate to interrupt the touching display.” Barbara’s voice spoke smoothly. “But there is a robbery happening on 10th street.” She hummed.
Dick and Wally both blushed slightly, looking at each other sheepishly. Right, they were still on duty.
“Were you watching us through the street cams again, Babs?”
Dick asked, taking his time to stand. He groaned slight, his old bones and muscles starting to show their age. Sure, he was able to do all sorts of gorgeous acrobatics, but that didn’t mean his knees didn’t crack like everyone else’s.
“That’s between me and my computer, Dickie. Now can your boyfriend get you guys there?”
She sighed, making Wally clear his throat.
“I can get us there.”
He confirmed, adjusting his suit so it wasn’t hiked up due to how they were sitting.
“Amazing, how about you get on it.”
Babs huffed, a soft laugh in her tone. Dick mouthed a ‘so bossy’ to Wally, making the other role his eyes but let out a soft giggle. He quickly scooped up Dick into his arms, holding him in a tight cradle.
“So humiliating.”
He mumbled, making the redhead snort.
“You love it.”
He responded, not missing the faint blush that crawled up his love’s cheeks. Dick shook his head.
“Let’s just get on with it.”
There were worse things that you could be doing as a superhero than sitting on a random roof with your boyfriend.
But one of them was not getting to return the favor to your boyfriend of watching you do impressive acrobatics, by getting to watch him absolutely body some criminal scum while having you sit pretty on the bank’s teller counter.
