Now that the box joinery is complete and dry fit it’s time for the lid. I asked my apprentice what species I should use and this is what they came up with. A lovely combination of walnut and torrefied, birds-eye maple. This probably isn’t what I would have chosen but now that it’s in front of me, I think it looks great! It’s nice to be able to draw ideas and opinions from the people around us. No, that’s not a mirror, and no, you’re not looking at a reflection on glass. That’s a piece of maple with a really nice finish coat. 😃 Sanded to 320 and 3 coats of gloss arm r seal, buffing with steel wool after the first coat, then a magic eraser after the second. The final coat is what I’d call a “skim coat” because the wood isn’t absorbing anything more at this point. I dip my cotton rag, then ring it out and apply the finish along the grain in even strokes the full length of the board. If done properly, you shouldn’t see any lines and any minor buff marks should catch the final layer of finish and disappear. Angle the wood to reflect light to check. If you see streaks, start over. Or let it dry and do a 4th coat. (Extra time spent here pays off) Also, I don’t care for tack cloth. I use compressed air to dust the piece after buffing. Depending on my mood, I may add a wax finish later, but I doubt it. 11” Whyte Laydie tunneled fifth string banjo with Curly and Birdseye Maple. Honduran Rosewood fingerboard, heel and rimcap, and Cuban Mahogany peghead. The calligraphy style inlay in the scoop was drawn by the owners good friend and talented artist @kldarnell1311 . This is one of a pair of banjos, the other will be finished up next week and has some design and size variations from this one.
