Postcard from Kalydon, apparently. They sure seem to be having fun, wouldn’t it be a shame if something... oops.
Anyway, we have: Polydeukes and Kastor, Theseus, Peleus, Meleagros, Atalante, Nestor and Tydeus. Had no idea how I imagine most of them before this pic, lol.
The star of the show? Defs the boar. Happy lil piggy.
Hittite rulers would love George Martin's fantasy epic, and no one can convince me otherwise: messed up families? Backstabbing nobles? Humans being humans in all the best and worst ways? Feels familiar.
Imagine Hattusili I obsessed with Aegon's conquest
Telepinu shaking his head sadly every time stupid shit happens because of the damn uncomfortable chair.
Suppiluliuma I defending Tywin Lannister. Passionately. Also, drawing maps of fictional battles.
catch Mursili II reading for the complex characters ("The human heart in conflict with itself" TM), but, frankly, preferring Ursula K. Le Guin.
Muwatalli would be somewhat disappointed - because where are the actual battles? - but find the political storyline sadly familiar.
Hattusili III would be a Stannis stan, and not even notice the irony.
Puduhepa would be all over the mystical side of the story, all the prophecies and religions (but fail to see why they can't coexist)
The anon earlier gave me an Idea and now I feel compelled to share.
Imagine: the person you reblog this from is getting a tatoo. You have to choose a classics-related word/name/phrase/quote/whatever.
Be as serious or as ironic as you want.
Funny suggestions should not be taken as offensive (anyone who feels uncomfortable with being the butt of a joke should probably not take part in this game, or note that they only expect serious suggestions)
Odysseus, a Dod Person TM: - Dogs are the best! They are loyal, brave, and will fight beings ten times their size if necessary. Horses, on the other hand, I just don’t get. Always so nervous and skittish, geez.
Diomedes, a Horse Person TM: - Yeah, but they are also smart, always alert to their surroundings, and surprisingly resilient. Horses rock, don’t talk shit about them.
Pallas, looking straight at the camera: - ... and that’s why those two get along so well.

Two men surrounded by cameras. One younger and stunningly handsome, another - plain, but full of quiet self-assurance.
The questions keep coming. The lights keep hounding them - making the first man grin and the second rub his tired eyes and apologize for sounding a tad sleepy.
"- Now, people, I am sure you all want to know how to become like the glorious Akhi... Achilles, but the truth is - you can never be me!
- ...Because you can only be yourself and fight your own battles - that's what he wanted to say!"

A man in a suit delivers a perfectly rehearsed speech about the greatness this country could achieve - if only the people vote for him.

A middle-aged man stares at his car's GPS device with the boundless hatred of those who know they messed up and need something - anything - to blame.
"- This is dry land. This is not Poseidon's domain. What the actual..."
A man and a woman in camo uniforms look at each other.
- Goddess, why are you showing this to me?
- You mean to say this is not worth looking at? There is a magnificent storm brewing, missing it would be such a shame.
- Looks like a storm in the works alright. How are they even in the world of the living?

- So, no overt interference unless necessary?
- Correct. And do give my regards to a certain Ithakan, will you?
He nods, and, as the erstwhile ruler of Argos prepares for his new mission, yet another piece of the puzzle falls into place.
The end of the Mahabharat. The Pandavas were on the right side of the great war, even if they were far from perfect. Still, the war caught up with them. Still, they had to pay for their actions. And the triumph of justice is anything but sweet. (If only the Nostoi weren’t lost, blast it)
But the most powerful part? Yudhishthira and the dog. Even if that dog was Dharma in disguise, Yudhishthir’s refusal to betray what he thought was a stray animal even for Svarga - is so poignant.
Austen: 3 favourite characters?
Do epic heroes count as characters? Let’s say they do, for the purpose of this question.
* Diomedes Tydeides. That man can tell the other Akhaian chiefs: “You guys can all run away if you like, I’M STAYING ” - and *mean* it.
* Antigone the way Sophokles portrays her. There are laws more important than those created by kings.
* On a more lighthearted note: Xanthias from the Batrakhoi. He’s just too relateable and funny, and full of salt and vinegar.
