This semester is already so amazing! . . It is such a blessing to be at a small rural hospital instead of a city hospital! Last semester was nice but this pace of being able to learn skills, collaborate with nurses and genuinely help out feels amazing and like I actually am a nurse. . . Writing up care plans for fake patients last year definitely prepared me for writing real ones this semester! . . Care plans are definitely not a strength for me, not written ones anyways! I constantly make mini care plans in my head and did it as a PSW/CNA/PCT all the time, if you see someone with reddened/pink skin over a boney prominence I immoderately start caring for it and thinking “I need to reposition this person every two hours” “I need to offload pressure on this area, let’s use a pillow to elevate it” “this breakdown is near my incontinence/damp(sweating), we need to keep it dry with barriers or gauze”. . . I am constantly using my nursing skills and applicable knowledge without really realizing it. I try to put myself in a real patient situation when I have to write these care plans for school, and then go back and find the correct references and citations needed to ensure my work is accurate and not plagiarized . . Sometime you have to do things that are fun, and things that scare you a little! the nursing definition of family is the relationships that the patient identifies as family, not relations through blood or marriage. My family doesn’t have traditions for things like Christmas trees, or decorating, or going on “adventures”, our life stories were always about keeping afloat. But now we are not only floating, but some days we are sailing. I am amazed that I have the support system I have now, through both my “real” family and his too. People who genuinely care about you and want to involve you in family activities. It’s nice to have a sense of belonging.
