Happy Nurses Week, I guess.

Things I don’t want this week:

Like baiting “nurse hero” post on Facebook

A “2020 year of the nurse” boarder for my profile picture

A tote bag with the name of my employer/ facility on it

Provided fast food lunches

Things I do want this week:

Fair wages

Safer working conditions (0 tolerance for continued patient to nurse abuse)

Benefits for part time workers making full time hours

Appropriate PPE

I mean, I’ll settle for a black pen. That’s fine too. I’m exhausted.

Me: I should be more careful with my money.

Also me: Buys 5 books, tickets to see Planet Earth 2 live, pays over £200 to jump out of a plane, buys loads of fabric even though I don’t have a sewing machine, practically lives off of Starbucks coffee...

life lately

got engaged a month and a half ago :) 

more tan than I've ever been after my first session working at the special needs camp (ps this is my dream job I just wanna do this forever thanks)

graduated school in june!

currently in between camp sessions (go back monday) and it’s been really nice having time at home with t. we even snuck in a few beautifully sunny cotty days

wedding isn’t until october 2020 so we have lots of planning time :)

I'm also planning a trip to nyc the first week of september with my aussie bestie!! just renewed my passport yesterday, and we booked broadway tickets for harry potter!

that’s pretty much it. life is good :)

I'm looking forward to coming home in september and actually getting some roots in again and really settle down into our life and the fall season

Did I mention that my wedding is in 15 days??? . . Everyone is doing their 10 year growth posts and I definitely did mine, but I wanted to use this moment to talk about tough things and what I have learned. . . I never hide it but struggled a lot as a teenager and child. I had a lot of really tough spot to be in that I wouldn’t wish on anyone else. But I will share some of the things I’ve learned. . . 1.your looks won’t drastically change old and a wrinkle or two, but I still have the same nose and round cheeks 2. No one- not a single person- is entitled to you, your presence or time- regardless of who they are to you or what they’ve done “for you”, this was something toxic I had a hard time with, but am better with now. If they make your life worse cut them out. 3. Happiness is a journey and a goal. I look back over the last five years and think some moments had been happy - but now realizing they were miserable - I had convinced even myself that they were happy. My goal is always to be in the pursuit of happiness to seek it out and find joy in simple things, but also know that definitions of happiness change, I never want to stay in a situation because it once made me happy when I can continue to keep trying to do things that make me happy rather than stewing in the past. . . And that’s a wrap on my BScN degree and my time at McMaster. I couldn’t have done it without the constant love and support from my family, my boyfriend who put up with my constant state of stress and anxiety for two years and stuck by me and helped me through the hard times, the friends I’ve made who were always there to lean on as we supported each other through the entire experience, and to many others who helped in so many ways along the journey. Some things people don't tell you about nursing school pt. 1

- You will run into nurses that eat their young and you will run into nurses that empower you. Stay close to the ones that empower you.

- Falling asleep for the first night before your set of shifts is always the hardest and most stressful. Accept it and move on.

- Coffee is a magical elixir (or tea)

- Don't let nurses dump their assignment on you, you are there to learn.

- Don't let patients treat you like garbage, be polite and empathetic but don't let them tear you down

- Find how you study best and stick with that.

- When you find that core group of friends in nursing, stick with them.

- Self care is IMPORTANT! You can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself!!!!!!***
