Bobby: There’s this new recruit Eddie Diaz. He graduated top of his class just this week. Guys over at Station 6 were dying to have him, but I want to convince him to join us.

Buck: Okay?

Bobby: Wait 🤔 Maybe you could talk to him. You’re about the same age, so he might open up to you.

Buck: …Got it.…

The next day

Buck: Okay, I fucked him 😌 You’re welcome.

Bobby: WHAT?! Why would you do that???

Buck: What? You told me to “talk” to him!

Bobby: Oh, for heaven’s sake! He’s never going to join the 118 now. I’d better start recruiting someone else before it’s too late.

A few moments later

Eddie: Hi, I’m Eddie Diaz. New recruit. Looking for Captain Nash.

You know what? I’d like to see Buck back to being Buck 1.0 just for a little bit. He’s frustrated and tired of breaking up with people, and he’s just tired of getting attached to someone. So he just hits the clubs and starts talking to strangers, kissing those strangers, and maybe taking them home.

He knows he’s just doing it because he’s mad at Tommy or at himself a little bit because he’s always moving too fast and it always blows up in his face.

Until the 118 and Maddie interfere and talk some sense into him, telling him he should stop his one-night stands. And he knows he should. So he calls a guy who gave him his number a few nights ago and goes to his house. Just to talk to him and spend a nice evening with him.

But then someone opens the front door and the guy freaks out.

“Oh god! You gotta go!” He pushes Buck to the back door.

“Whoa, wait! What are you doing?!”

“He can’t see you! You have to go!”

“You got a boyfriend or something?”

“It’s my husband! I’m sorry! I’ll call you later, all right?”

And the next thing you know, Buck’s back at Eddie’s couch, having drinks with his best friend, complaining that he can’t find the right person for himself.

Ficlet Friday

I was tagged by @chimneyschewinggum, @thecarrott, and @paperyowl today. This is neither #freeevanbuckley2026 crash-out or fluffy (because I haven't gotten there yet). Instead, have some more of the next Chapter of I'm Where the Spiders Go.

“If you’re hungry, I can heat one of these up,” Evan tells him, holding up the cooler bag to make it obvious what he’s talking about.  He seems a lot more awake than he did on the doorstep, ready to talk a mile a minute again. “Gina came by the station to help us prep everything, but they’re going to take at least thirty minutes to heat up.”

“I’m not really hungry,” Tommy replies, the last two days finally catching up to him. For all that he invited Evan in, wants him around, he just wants the noise to stop.

The comment is so soft spoken it barely seems to register for Evan.  He heads to the kitchen and starts to unload the cooler in to the fridge.  “Gina said the lasagna needs to be in the oven for at least an hour, but that the pasta bake can be reheated for about 20 minutes if you want.  Or, it looks like you have enough stuff in your fridge to make soup if you have some broth.  I can probably manage that if you wanted to take a shower, or lie down for a minute.”

“Damn it, Evan! I said I wasn’t hungry!”  It’s not a yell, but Tommy’s voice is raised enough to freeze Evan where he’s standing in front of the double door fridge.  He folds in on himself, shoulders rounding, making himself look impossibly small in the LAFD issue hoodie he’s wearing.

Fuck, he’s an asshole.
