Linguistic Diversity Challenge Day 4: Bukhori
What is the language called in English and the language itself?
The language is called Bukhori, Bukhari or Bukharian in English and бухорӣ (bukhori) in the language itself.
Where is the language spoken?
Bukhori is spoken by the Bukharan Jewish community of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. However, most Bukharan Jewish people now live in Israel or the USA (especially NYC).
How many people speak the language?
According to Ethnologue, there are currently about 110 600 Bukhori speakers, of whom 50 000 live in Israel.
Which language family does it belong to? What are some of its relative languages?
Bukhori is a dialect of Tajik, which in turn is a dialect of Farsi/Persian, a language from the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family. It is mutually intelligible with other Tajik dialects, especially those from northern Tajikistan, and it is also similar to other dialects of Farsi such as Dari and Darwazi. However, because of its Jewish origins it has a lot of Hebrew influences. Bukhori has also been influenced by Russian and Uzbek due to historic contact with these languages.
What writing system does the language use?
Bukhori normally uses Hebrew script, but in the past it has also used the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. These days, the Latin alphabet is sometimes used especially in America among young Bukharan Jewish people.
What kind of grammatical features does the language have?
I was unable to find any resources specifically for Bukhori grammar so I researched Tajik grammar in general. Keep in mind that these things may be slightly different in Bukhori.
Tajik does not have grammatical gender, and adjectives do not agree with nouns. In Tajik, there are two participles: present and past. There are no articles. Verbs are conjugated into first person plural and singular, second person plural and singular and third person plural and singular.
What does the language sound like?
This is a video of a Bukharian man talking about the language and his life story (subtitles in English)
This is a Bukharian woman talking about her grandmother’s life (subtitles in English and Bukhori)
What do you personally find interesting about the language?
Personally, I find the history of Bukhori really interesting, especially the way the language has been influenced by things like religious languages, Soviet influence and of course the dominant languages of the region. I discovered this language when I read an article about the Bukharian community in New York, and I found out recently that Queens College, CUNY, has become the first American university to teach Bukhori, which will hopefully help to preserve the language.
