Nanny Bike Commutery Activated

Long live new server!Posted by Three-Pin That sounds suspiciously like a strange pr0n marketed to be 'green' but here's the deal:My part time nanny takes the kids to the park at least once a day, often twice. Due to lugging a heavy stroller (early on, a double stroller even) she was limited to one park close by or two if she was willing to haul that 35 minutes each way. Now, she was already pretty planet friendly, in that she wasn't driving. But she was limited in range. I put the Burley Bee trailer (WHICH I had almost sold to a Friend of TLTC after I built the Xtracycle, before mywifebot nixed the exchange) onto a spare department store mountain bike left in my stable by my wifebot's sister*, and she started riding them to the park instead of walking. She waffled on doing it all summer fearing her lack of exercise to be a problem, but I just tole her that you do it a few times and start building your endurance etc. So she finally committed about a month back. Within a week, she was enthusiastically taking them much farther, to a string of parks that were previously inaccessible to her, and now she goes up to THREE times a day. Think of all that driving, were she someone else doing this in an SUV or what have you. The kids love it, she loves it, wins all around. I hadn't actually seen them together in that thing. I was using it to haul Matteo around in his car seat before he was old enough to be on a bike properly, and before that I took Z around in it, but never the pair. It's pretty cute. *She brought her own mountain bike but I found issues in the brakes and shifting, which I plan to fix for her, but in the meantime..._________________"Meanwhile, back at ol' timey penal colony T0L-U 333..."

Bane Ridin Other Than Intended Use

I got Bane, my Specialized Carve 29er SS, to use on Mt. Tam and similar rides, where I could brutalize myself on the way up with one gear, then brutalize myself on the way down with the rigid fork. It's a trippy bike but I LOVE it. So much so that despite the fact my mountain opportunities are less frequent than desired, I've been taking it out anyway for other things. That first ride to/from the mountain I remember thinking 'well, you can see why SS guys drive to the mountain: this gearing is like a clown bike on flats!' and was pretty sure I wouldn't often be riding it around in that element. But here we are. I've taken it to work a few times, just screwing around on the commute and taking it up hills and checking out the differences between it and my other bikes. Last weekend, I was taking the kids on a family ride and decided to use the trailer. So, since my wifebot was coming and taking her casual old timey upright (which I call Jaunty and she has not yet named) I decided to use Bane for it. Get a spin workout in, drag the load, why not? One thing that continues to annoy me about the trailer is how smashed they are in there... It worked GREAT. At that kind of speed, with that load, it wasn't terribly different than the gearing I'd be using half the time on the cargo bike, and it was fun being so simple. You can tell it's simple, despite the towing. It's silent and bubbly and fun. Got a few people giving me wide-eyed stares, but what else is new!_________________

Bane Towage Now With Added Ice Cream

We did another family ride last weekend, and again, I towed the trailer with Bane, a 29er mountain single with rigid fork. While that continues to be a dodgy use of that bike technology, it's really fun: I have to ride slower for the kids and my wifebot anyway, and it means I get a good workout out of the deal. We went down through Sausalito to have lunch, took a noodle back... The kids liked it even better this time. I padded their seat to make them more upright, and we ditched the helmets as the trailer has a roll cage. Also, ICE CREAM._________________
