The Baby Scorpion Cluster, C76 // Dionysus
The Baby Scorpion Cluster (NGC 6231) is an open cluster of stars located about 5,600 light years away in the constellation of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Discovered by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Hodierna (1597-1660) before 1654, he listed it in his catalog as Luminosae. The cluster is about 2-7 million years old and contains several hundred stars. It is best seen during the winter in the southern hemisphere.
