1. Six weeks is not long enough to evaluate for metabolic effects of antipsychotics. Six months is more like it. While cardiological side effects often show up rather quickly in crazy meds, regardless of class, metabolic side effects usually take a lot longer.
2. The control AP. Risperdal (risperidone) is pretty bad when it comes to weight gain and other metabolic issues. Not as bad as Zyprexa (olanzapine), Seroquel (quetiapine), or Clozaril (clozapine), but still pretty bad. If they wanted to compare it to a med that didn’t cause weight gain, they should have used Geodon (ziprasidone). But, you know, then the sponsor’s med wouldn’t have looked so good.
