Hi, do you have any good resources explaining common types of facial differences (preferably with pictures)? I already have a character with a port wine birthmark, but I want to incorporate a variety of facial differences in my body of work.

Hey! I'm glad you're interested in learning more about facial differences :) (smile) Especially with having more than one character.

My main recommendation would be "Types Of Visible Difference" by ChangingFaces. You can read it here. There are other pages linked there (the "see our page on X") that break specific types of facial differences further with pictures and/or descriptions, either way giving you basic information on what to google search for further research. A big category that this page is missing are facial differences caused by chromosomal conditions, which are extremely common (for example Down Syndrome).

There is also "Defining Facial Differences" by AboutFace that has way more entries, but there are no photos and it has a lot of medical language. If you're just looking for ideas it can be great to just read the little blurb written about the condition and then search for actual pictures if that's something you're looking for. It also allows you to filter for congenital and acquired conditions which is pretty cool (and also see that a huge portion of facial differences is congenital).

The third (worst) option is just going through Wikipedia pages in the "skin-related conditions" or "craniofacial syndromes" categories, but a lot of these are very rare/obscure and a lot of them don't have images attached. The first two options are much better in my opinion, but it's still something.

My personal recommendations for common but unrepresented facial differences to incorporate would be craniofacial conditions (e.g., Treacher Collins or Apert Syndromes), chromosomal disorders (e.g., Wolf–Hirschhorn or Down Syndromes), cranial nerve diseases (they're mostly just differentiated by numbers unfortunately, but there's a couple of them), and cancers of the head and/or neck. It would be nice to see them shown more, especially in a positive light.

hello! friend here! i feel the need to disclaim that "autistic math major" may have oversold my understanding of math a little.. i'm a stat major and my calc skill is mid at best despite loving it soooo so much. so i'm prob missing nuances. but my GOD the use of it as a metaphor for the way kujen instrumentalizes + dehumanizes jedao was so perfect. i yelped ALOUD when i got to the integral under the "i'm your gun" excerpt. jedao 2 isn't the original curve but behaves the same way and that's what matters to kujen far more than those pesky constants that get erased when u take a derivative. applying a mathematician's eye for simplistic beauty to The Mind Of A Real Human Person is totally exactly what kujen does. jedao is presented as simplifyable, derivable, integratable from the start vs kujen whose graph is not a function Until he does psych surgery on himself. but being the math is a choice kujen intentionally makes whereas jedao doesnt understand it and therefore cant escape that framework, like that jedao2 voidmoth (btw i love the scared jedao2 eyes in the wings) pinned to the paper by pins that are themselves vectors (wow....). ill shut up now but its just all really good. also the drawing of kujen holding jedao right at the end is sooooo beautiful and so evil 👍 great work

YES YEAH YEAHHHHHH. I'm so enamoured by everyone's interpretation of this specific page. I will post a fuller director's cut explanation of some narrative bits later, but another thing that may have been missed: In this section, tying into the theme of reexpression, we shift from Cartesian coordinates to polar/spherical/cylinderical as we introduce Jedao 2. This is a nod to the fact that this is Je2, not Jedao, (who we established page 2 is associated with Cartesian coordinates). For the non math viewer this would've been signaled with Je2s papers being torn up versions of Jedao's, but the narrative is carried deeper in the math too!

The moth, by the way, is Kujen. Insect pins = the silver lances + look at his eyes going wide here :)

there are no metaphors, honestly! i pretty explicitly state it, even long before now.😈 but yes, that's the only way he could have even gotten out of it at all!

under the cut for spoilers for the latest chapter, but this is mostly just a list of the big things that were stated outright leading up to it, too:

most blatant is that two chapters ago, gerry had a whole scene dedicated to a conversation with mike about his suspicion that tim is preparing himself to "throw in his lot with terminus..."

...after he handles dispatching another end avatar in an uncomfortably calm way.

he dealt the final blow with jane, which was his first experience being more responsible for a life ending.

one of the very first things he ever did in the whole story was burn the catalogue of the trapped dead! he had very strong feelings about it from day one, and he was the one to put all those other ghosts to rest, and refused to let gertrude be any different than the rest of them. death is indiscriminate.

when gerry died in scotland, tim witnessed it (after stewing in the knowing anticipation for over a week) and gerry says even in that moment as well as in the conversation with mike that he felt him way too close to The Veil.

but in this chapter, tim does outright say He Is Dead. he wonders if he'll even be able to change his clothes.

but more importantly, gerry has a whole sobbing breakdown after failing to find his pulse, and tim straight up calls it "mourning."

also more of a metaphor than those but still fun: he wore a bauta mask to that show, which is known as a ghost costume. which danny said WASN'T a costume, and then ripped off of him to imply instead that his actual face was the lie. i.e., "you're actually a ghost."

i've been laying the groundwork for a long while! also with ren's work as such a big part of mine, i am firmly in camp end!tim forever 😈 of course i was gonna bring it into PBR.

I really love your style! Especially the way you do body hair, you draw attention to it in a really interesting way. Your colors are also really good.

thank you!!! i usually just reference my own body hair when drawing it i used to simplify it a lot more but now ive been like ok i need to like.....analyze how the hair grows to make this look better(and good thing i did bc i like it alot)

body hair isnt perfect or uniform so hairs that go different ways r allowed and everyones body hair patterns are different! and this is mostly what i keep in mind when i draw it ive gotten so used to it drawing something without it look strange lol

THE ONLY THING i cant reference with myself is a full beard cuz whilest i do grow facial hair its fucked up im so bad at beards jon is making me look up how beards grow

21, 32, 40 for Ailos?

ailos time :) 21: do they follow their head, their heart, or their body? ailos follows their head most of the time. it’s how they were raised to act. but in some cases, when their family and loved ones are in danger, they’ll act a little foolishly and follow their heart instead. (see: ailos wanting to bring fiona and vallee on the ship with them and potentially putting them in danger) 32:  do they seek control, or do they want less of it? it depends on the kind of control. over their family’s company? they want none of it. they don’t want to be responsible for jarvistech. but for their own life? they wish they could control that. they hate how much control their mother has over them even now that she’s disowned them. they hate how out of control they feel about people recognizing them, people finding them, people knowing them... they hate feeling like they can’t control even their own image. in their ideal world they’d have never been born a jarvis at all and they could have forged a life for themself instead of having their mother forge it for them 40: do they enjoy poetry? ailos does! writing has never been their strong suit so they’re no good at writing it but they like reading it. old ass
