✨ Sapphic-A-Thon Day 3 Update ✨
Wow, already onto day 3! Time is flying fast. Just me? Maybe just me.
I didn’t read any of GIRLS MADE OF SNOW AND GLASS or ASH today, but I did read THE PRICE OF MEAT by KJ Charles this morning, and have it fulfilling my NON-COMING OUT STORY bingo square. I gave it 4 ⭐️ and review can be read here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2215862781
After finishing PRICE OF MEAT I started GRRRLS ON THE SIDE by Carrie Pack. I’m on page 71, which puts me less than a third of the way through the book. Have it on my bingo board as being my LESS THAN 500 GR RATINGS, but it can also fulfill BI MC and MC REALIZES THEY’RE QUEER. I’m really liking it so far and like a lot of the stuff it’s saying, but at the very beginning there’s these girls calling all the ladies to the front of the crowd, and my brain is thinking about how potentially transmiasic that can be because not all people who society reads as women are actually women and there are some women who society will read as masculine/men. Isn’t the punk/Riot Grrrl movement transmiasic and problematic on that front?
How’s everyone else’s reading going?

This Book Will Riot Your World - My Advanced Review of “Grrrls On The Side”, by Carrie Pack
Let me start by stating the obvious :
I am not American.
(Shocker? Really?)
I just point that out to say that the 90s were vastly different in Europe (at least in France) than it was in the U.S.
So to say that I was very interested in @carriepack new novel would be an understatement, both on an intellectual point of view and a personal one.
See, having fat, bisexual character as the lead of a book is not something I’m used to, and definitely something I could have used when I was Tabitha’s age.
(That being said, for all of our differences, a lot of moments in this book felt like a screenshot of my teenage years, so, one point in the “we’re not that different” column)
The very short review now : I adored this book.
The long-ish review : This book has so many things to fall in love with.
The characters are all lovable, and realistic. They’re not perfect–none of them, not even the main one–but their flaws make them all the more lovable.
The emotions are tangible and gripping.
But above all else, what I loved about this book is how contemporary it feels. Yes, the 1990s are strong in this one, but the themes it brings the spotlight to are very 2010s.
Carrie Pack manages to show that there is no right way to revolt, no right way to be a woman, no right way to label oneself, no right way to love–there are no guidelines on either of these issues. The way *you* choose is the right way *for you*, and you’re allowed to grow and evolve in that way.
Finally, what finished to sell me on this story and made me wish I could continue to read Tabitha’s journey is a particular side of her. See, she is a Riot Grrrl, there is no doubt about it. But the path she chooses is the path of being herself, with her tenderness and her desire to put the needs of her loved ones before her owns (sometimes to her own detriment, yes, as all nice people tend to do).
In these days and age, being a nice person seems to be pretty radical, doesn’t it?
