The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli Review
I read Simon VS the Homo Sapiens Agenda not long ago and just fell in loooove with Becky Albertalli's gift for diverse story telling. I just HAD to pick her next book up and read it ASAP!
The Upside of Unrequited follows our main character, Molly, a girl who's had 27 crushes but no boyfriends... and no rejections either. The book takes us through a portion of her life, where she not only shares why she feels that not having a boyfriend and only having crushes is okay, but she also grows as a person and learns by going outside of her comfort zone.
First of all... YAY for diverse books!!! WE NEED MORE OF THEM! This book has it all. It's got a realm of diverse characters in terms of colour, sexual orientation, body sizes.... I could go on. It's very refreshing to read from these perspectives. It's unfortunate that it's not done enough because I find that when I do read from them it's just so normal. I don't ever feel uncomfortable, and I think it's interesting to read what someone else's life is like when dealing with issues that I have never dealt with myself.
I loved these characters. Becky Albertalli does a fantastic job at creating real characters- those who aren't perfect and are flawed, but are also super likeable and funny. I found myself laughing out loud and routing (more like shipping ;) ) for the characters the whole way through.
So Ms Albertalli when are you going to come out with another book?????
4/5 stars. I didn't like it quite as much as Simon VS the Homo Sapiens Agenda but it was still really enjoyable. I read it in one day- practically one sitting!
