Ariel & Christina Discuss the Solarpunk Merits of Walkaway by Cory Doctorow

Cory Doctorow’s 2017 novel Walkaway has a reputation in solarpunk circles as a great example of a solarpunk lifestyle, and a must-read book for everyone from the individual who lives and breathes solarpunk to the solarpunk-curious to general science fiction fans. But what is it about Walkaway that gives it solarpunk cred? Ariel and Christina ponder this, discussing features of the novel that could be considered solarpunk, and some that might be more post-cyberpunk than anything, and how some of the ideologies and technologies are or have been applied in our present world. Is the world of Walkaway an achievable solarpunk paradise, or a nice hopeful story featuring very cool gadgets and bites of lefty philosophy? Or something else entirely? What is the draw, here, anyway? Join us to think through some of the quandaries and ideas the book raises.

Dorothy Day was an American journalist, social activist, and Catholic convert. In the 1930s, Day worked closely with fellow activist Peter Maurin to establish the Catholic Worker Movement, a pacifist movement that continues to combine direct aid to the poor and homeless with nonviolent direct action on their behalf. Another church is possible!

Global systems of domination keep us isolated.  Capitalism, white supremacy, cisheteropatriarchy, ableism, and christian hegemony violently tear our communities apart. The church has for too long perpetuated these power structures—but we will not.

Our interconnectedness and intimacy are powerful weapons in the struggle for liberation. These connections must be strengthened and refined.

We must practice uncompromising dedication to one another, forged in the fires of solidarity. We must build our lives around the material support of people who have been violently targeted by dominant powers. Our lives depend on it. We must break out of our lives of isolation and build up lives of discipline, connection, kindness, and mutual aid in the commune.

It’s time to discover what faithfulness looks like in the commune.

Join us this summer on our second annual retreat

June 17-20th, revolutionary leftists of faith from across the so-called United States will gather on the occupied land of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ Nation, commonly known as Minnesota, to actualize this vision of the commune.

We will join together as a multifaith community to pray, prophesy, and worship. We will learn from one another through workshops and through the simple intimacy of sharing a life for four days. We will strengthen our relationships and networks and build new ones.

In order to make this happen, we need your help!

All funds raised will be used for food and supplies, lodging, or scholarships.

Scholarships. The suggested retreat fees are a sliding scale of $55-95 per person, but we won't turn anyone away for lack of funds. If you are able, please consider donating a scholarship to allow a comrade to attend the retreat. The planning committee will prioritize folks from marginalized communities in the distribution of scholarships.

Lodging. As a security measure, we will not be publicly disclosing the location of the retreat site. Our accommodations include multi-bed cabins, a community kitchen, and shared bathroom facilities.

The Minneapolis Catholic Worker is an intentional community and network of hospitality houses engaged in anti-oppression organizing and activism and rooted in the Catholic Worker tradition started by Dorothy Day.

How far do I want to go into the reality of liberation? Am I willing, in contemplation, to put all the anger, all the disappointment, all the pain and grief that haunt each day into the hands of the living God? And then, am I willing to emerge from contemplation and face again the oppression and pain-loving each and every person, each and every element of creation enough to struggle that day for its liberation? And then, am I willing to do it again tomorrow and again and again each tomorrow as long as I live?
