hello!!
i am so stupidly fixated on '66 Joker and '66 Penguin, but for right now, im just gonna ask about one of those silly guys. (though the chance of me asking about Penguin is high.)
can i get your thoughts on '66 Joker?? please don't hesitate to rant, i love long posts on '66 villains. he's so silly to me, and my preferred Joker in terms of DC live action media, my love for the 1960s aside. any tidbit on him out of the show and movie (+ comics), i get my hands on in any way i can. that stupid mustache <3
(and as a final note--or, two really--one, the way you draw him is perfect and i eat it up--and second, i can see him with Riddler, Penguin, Batman, and Eartha Kitt's Catwoman, and i can't tell if that says something about me or him.)
Absolutely hilarious coincidence that I should see this AFTER posting Joker art that also happens to be Mockingbird. That's very, very funny, actually. But I mean in which case, I hope you liked it lol!!
Very fair fixations, Joker and Penguin in 66 are some of the best characters and I'll gladly have a talk about Joker! (Also just side note before I get into it, yeah absolutely feel free to ask about something Penguin, he's great too, probably my... 3rd or 4th favourite rogue from the show?)
Joker, Joker... what a character. I mean I love him, he's hilarious, and he's got some of the best episodes of the show and I find his writing is helped massively by Lorenzo Semple Jr., but that's not saying much because Lorenzo was the best writer in the show in my opinion; I feel he understood the characters to a slightly further extent, if that makes sense. Not that there's any particularly bad Joker episode, because if memory serves, his writing is typically good (the characters surrounding him, however... uhhh-). Anyway, massive fan of the fact for once he's actually FUN! I never really understand in some modern things when they try making him overly edgy to the point where you just sort of have to step back, because, he's... the Joker. He runs around wearing clown makeup lol there's not a lot that needs to be elaborated on there.
But that's why I love 66! It's fun and silly, and Joker's need to do something is directly proportional to how funny it is or how necessary it is to be done so that the plan can work in the end, therefore being its funniest! I love him in the movie because he's really just there for a laugh, and I like that they show how jovial he is via him being the peacemaker of the group, however "shocking" that may be to some (particularly to Riddler and Penguin's hands on the other end of the shock buzzers, ouch!), and how this is a frequently shown trait. Even when he argues with Penguin a bunch in their episodes (The Zodiac Crimes/The Joker's Hard Times/The Penguin Declines, S2), he's the one who breaks it up and points out that they need to work together.
Now here's something else I really like, and it's all the things they reveal about him and how consistent it stays (they also do this with Riddler when they mention he's the best safecracker in Gotham and we see this is something he does multiple times, even if you don't realise it in the moment), and it's that Joker may be silly, but he's still very smart! The man does robotics! He built three(? at least two, but I believe there's another that Batman and Robin get their hands on?) fully-functioning, realistic robots whilst in prison at a... course they were running? I mean that sounds like a terrible idea, but blame Warden Crichton, yanno. Or don't. I blame O'Hara for how much the criminals escape, at least.
Regardless, he's intelligent, and we see him working a lot with machinery and tech in a number of episodes, such as the trick vending machines (The Joker Goes to School/He Meets His Match, The Grisly Ghoul, S1 - my favourite Joker episode), the mesmerising hypnotism box (The Impractical Joker/The Joker's Provokers, S2), the robots I mentioned (The Joker's Last Laugh/The Joker's Epitaph, S2), the paint guns and art piece he tries to destroy Robin with (Pop Goes the Joker/Flop Goes the Joker, S2), and a.... high-tech flying saucer? (The Joker's Flying Saucer, S3). There's a few more but I'd be here forever to list them all, lol.
I also like the references they make to his past, such as Batman saying the Joker used to be a hypnotist of some kind, and this stays consistent too, less so than the robotics and such, but it's still there if you look for it! And... speaking of which, that and a few other factors contributed to giving me a potential idea for 66 Joker's past and what he did occupation-wise, if you're interested. I won't go into it here because this is getting long and I've other things to say, but anyone is free to send another ask if they want me to elaborate.
Point is, 66 Joker shows that a Joker can be whimsical and still smart at the same time, and I really like that about him. And, of course, Caser Romero's performance. He made the Joker in that series, and it was absolutely brilliant. The laugh is perfect, and I love the details he adds in, a few of which people who I've watched the series with didn't notice until I pointed it out. For instance, have you guys noticed that 66 Joker doesn't ever blink? The only time he shuts his eyes is if he's laughing super hard, but other than that, he never ever blinks. Just an interesting detail that goes into my priorly-mentioned theory, actually, lmao.
And yes, I can't not mention the moustache. For anyone that doesn't know, it remains there because Caser Romero had become so well known with the moustache that he refused to shave it, so they just painted the makeup over top. And that is stupid, but that's why it works. 66 is stupid, and so is the Joker (/pos); Adam West himself thought it was perfectly on-brand for the show, and he was totally correct.
Now, your shipping points. What good taste you have. Romantic-wise, I agree wholeheartedly with two of those, because Mockingbird (Joker/Penguin) and Catjokes (Joker/Catwoman) are two of my favourite ships from the show, they're just... brilliant (I made a post with ship propaganda for them a while ago because of the shipping polls), and they bounce off each other in a wonderful way, along with having that good "ship tension" if you get what I mean? Kitt!Catwoman is definitely best for Catjokes, but I find after seeing Joker and Meriwether!Catwoman in the film, they could work too, and it would be very cute as well. I still prefer Kitt in that ship, but it's nice to have options LOL. Although I'd argue Meriwether!Catwoman works best in Riddlecat or some form of longer, more thought-out Batcat. But yes, Joker could get any Catwoman, I think. Not that Newmar!Catwoman DESERVES him, though, after what she did, but that is the tragedy of Stanley's writing.
(Side note #2, but if you like 66 Mockingbird, then stay posted, as when PenguinWeek rolls around, I've got a little something ready for one of the days...)
Riddler's another case, because PERSONALLY I don't see them as romantic, but if this is what you like, then I see where you're coming from, because what I do like with them is my headcanon that they're besties, lol. I can picture them putting a bucket of water above Penguin's cell door and giggling like teenagers when he undoubtedly walks under it, getting covered with dampness as he loudly complains with a series of "WEHK!"s. (I also think Riddler may have helped Joker somewhat with those robots, but again that's another post's rant if I remember or get asked). I do agree Riddler and Joker would get along very well, whilst carring some of the usual friendship disputes that they'd make up for fairly quickly, but just to me personally I don't feel the same ship tension there as I do with Catjokes and Mockingbird.
As for Batman, it's a similar sort of point to above for me personally, because I can see where that's coming from to some extent with the first Joker episode, and, well I wrote points about this already in the unbiased ship propaganda lol, but those points aside, I (personal opinion!!) didn't really feel as though they had much going for them as far as canon content was concerned. Like as opposed to something like the Lego Batman stuff. I've not watched the Lego (YET), but I've seen clips and I feel something like that has more points toward it, you know? As it stands, I cannot really see them working in the same way some of the others would, but this being said, I believe they could potentially have something under like, very specific AU circumstances. I saw a comment once that compared them to like. Two dads playing pretend for their kid, and yeah, if there was an AU where that was the case, like it was all play-pretend and Robin was the kid and such then absolutely I get that. In the canon world as it is, I don't really see it as much because I feel they don't have as much tension, but no shots at anyone who likes the ship, though! You do you, it's just not my kind of thing in 66 at least, and I don't hate it or anything, I'm just sort of neutral.
And you having all the Joker ships does say something about you, and it's that you really like Joker lmao (don't worry, I have a lot of Riddler ships). But yeah, nice ship choices and nice character fixations, lol!
As for your other point about my art, thank you so much!! The first time I drew him, I was rather surprised with how it came out, because I honestly thought he'd be hard to properly figure, but the shapes just sort of came to me whilst I was watching one of his episodes for inspiration. I'm really glad you like it! I love making stuff knowing that it might make someone else happy too, so to see it's doing this for someone who really cares about a character in a time where not a lot of content is made for them is just amazing to hear, really happy you enjoy seeing it, I'll have to draw more of him in future! I've also written for him if you've not seen that yet.
Anyway, that essentially concludes the ramble, but if anyone wants to ask about anything here then I can write something else up too, of course, just send an ask (no shame in sending multiple for different subjects!! I'm happy to get a bunch of asks, I love this show)!
Thank you for the ask, have a lovely day!
