Profusely illustrated with grand two-page spreads, the book explores mystical Symbolist art with ultra high resolution images of rare and never-before-published artworks and photographs; from Albrecht Dürer to William Blake and Alphonse Mucha, with stops at the Invisible College and Joséphin Péladan’s legendary occult Salon Rose+Croix.

THE ORCHID GARDEN supernatural horror fantasy art 1919-1921

This book collects eerie and creepy artworks from the legendary THE ORCHID GARDEN, the FIRST supernatural fantasy magazine (1919-1921).

You’ve probably heard of Der Orchideengarten, the legendary German supernatural horror magazine published from January 1919 until November 1921. Though its literary content has been widely reprinted, the artwork—which ranges from medieval etchings to occult woodblocks to expressionist visions—has gone largely undocumented. Hence this Kickstarter campaign from @centuryguild.

The artworks balance the romantic and the gothic with hyper-elegant sophistication. The examples below only begin to convey the magazine’s incredible production values. Our friends at Century Guild are lavishing that same attention to detail on their reproductions.
