Chapter 1014 — A lifelong ham actor
Why do you do this to me, Oda? My poor heart. It can’t take much more.
First; Chopper, what have you done?
No. We don’t make deals with the devil or with evil scientists. That’s just not— no. Stop it.
Second, I wonder what Momo’s role will be, based on his readings? And who is he sensing?
What do you have to tell everyone?
And yes, deal with the frog. Always deal with the frog first.
And then my heart. Please deal with this scabbard-caused pain.
I’d love to read up on actor psychology to better understand Kanjuro:
Did he ever truly see Kin’emon as a friend? Where is the line between act and reality drawn?
If someone can enlighten me as to the chapter title in Japanese, that’d be great! For today I have learned that a ham actor is “an overacting inferior performer” according to English stackexchange, apparently originating from American English in 1882. I wonder if they use the same term in the Japanese original or a similar term.
Kaido mentioned earlier how Luffy glares at him, even when unconscious. But here his face is completely blank; what is going on? Is he really completely defeated?
Maybe One Piece will end next chapter with Oda going “and the lesson is that sometimes you just can’t do it, however hard you try”.
Sanji and Zoro here are a great proxy for the rest of the crew. The other crew members are shown while Bao Huang is still speaking, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to protest before they’ve heard it all. But Sanji and Zoro are shown last, when the speech is done so they can voice the sentiments of the whole crew.
I wonder where Sanji dumped Zoro, or if he’s still carrying him like an overgrown birthday present.
It’s also interesting to see Law and Kid’s quite different reactions - Luffy seems to have had some part of Law’s plan, hence an apprehensive/troubled look, while Kid really was just going his own way, not caring about Luffy’s fate at all. Go punk pirate, blaze your own trail!
Moreover, we see that Luffy really is in the water, but that he’s still alive with the air bubbles and all. But they’re quite close to shore, as is shown in the last panel.
Will the Polar Tang pick him up? Will he be washed ashore? Will a giant koi eat him? Will he get washed out to sea, never to be seen again?
The dramatic tension is rising! Will we get to the end of the act soon?
