fully functional and FREE!

all books have in-game effects: either skill increase or focused, inspired, flirty, or energized moodlets.

skills include logic, charisma, and research and debate

should be mostly base game compatible (but lmk if not and i'll do my best to address it), research and debate skill ones require Discover University EP

i made much fewer books for constance because the sims 4 already has a surprisingly wide selection of base game books about music, poetry, and parody versions of various irl literary classics that constance would be interested in reading. i felt a need to make leftist books particularly because there was none in the game (not surprisingly lol).

The most fascinating bit for me is this:

“The person who is not an immediate sufferer but who has the capacity to become a secondary sufferer through sympathy for a generalized picture of suffering, and who documents this suffering in the interest of eventual social intervention — such a person occupies the position of the modern subject.” (119)

Scared of Baby Sex

Dispesh Chakrabarty points to descriptions of bodies in The Crooked Line in his Habitations of Womanhood as primers to Chughtai’s illustration of modernity. In the article, Chakrabarty looks at Norbert Elias’ conception of “the civilizing process” as integrally tied to the development of the body in terms of Chughtai’s use of Shaman in her novel. The idea is that Shaman’s earthy childhood, whose descriptions are laden with biological processes and embodiment, acts as a prologue to Chughtai’s depiction of modernization for which she uses the vehicle of Shaman’s development. Evoking the understanding of a nation as a body, Elias looks at modernization as disciplining the body (nation) through a set of constraints that creates a division of youth and adult where youth is characterized by emphasis on its biological functions and adult by a commitment to social structure. Chakrabarty points to the passage in the book where Shaman is breast-feeding while her Unna is having sex with her lover as a blurring of the social and bodily functions in the process of modernization. The article continues on to look at further constraints from an authoritarian patriarchal structure that effaces the low(-classed)/earthly/female in modern processes. The article moves on to emphasize how other instances in the text depict the interaction of Shaman’s young fleshy rebellion and the rigidness of structure. The line where the instinctual is shaped by the social restrictions is blurred.

Hesitant to look at child sexuality (like so many people fearing to be misconstrued in their interest) Chakrabarty makes fleeting mention of how authority polices feminine sexuality after pointing out the breast-feeding instance. It is understandable for him not to want to write about it, but I found the selection of block quote amusing, and the following paragraph even more so. Chakrabarty chooses to present a depiction of the event which is deeply unsettling in the sexualization of a newborn instead of describing it in order to make his point, which is eventually about the social policing of the wet nurse’s sexual choice. Perhaps Chakrabarty wanted to show the visceral quality to the scene, which highlights his point about embodiment. However, he follows the quote with a summary of the effect this event has on Shaman, in what I think is specially facetious language, stating that “life for [Shaman] and her wandering hands becomes one long search for breasts and warm female bodies.” The setup is excellent for a look at how child sexuality intersects with female sexuality in terms of what is abject to the modernized nation (body). Both Anna and Shaman’s sexuality being policed by patriarchal structures of differing degrees. And, the violent aversion/attraction Chakrabarty and reader feel for Shaman as a sexual baby.
