Schoenberg (Sunday)
For two years, SNO has presented the arrangements of other composers created by Arnold Schoenberg and his students in the early 20th Century. This February, SNO will perform the music of the man himself, Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1. James Lee III will be our featured composer, writing his own extended work for chamber orchestra.
SNO returns, as it does every season, to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for an exciting pair of performances.

Schoenberg - Chamber Symphony no. 1 in E major
It’s always funny to have a retrospective look at “scandalous” works of art. The older the work, the funnier the scandal seems to us. Because what was shocking back then is mild and tame now. Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is a famous example of this: the premiere ended in a riot, and now it’s considered a crown jewel of music history. This work also helped spark an agitated audience, along with music from Schoenberg’s student, Alban Berg. The program of that concert included Webern’s Six Pieces for Orchestra op.6, Zemlinsky’s Four Orchestral Songs on poems by Maeterlinck, this work, two songs from Berg’s Altenburg Lieder, and Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder. However, the riot that shut down the performance happened after the Berg songs, so Mahler went unheard. This work follows the German tradition of double-function form, where the whole piece is one sonata form movement, but different sections imply a multi-movement structure. Schoenberg also had worked for a concert hall that had limited players, and scored a lot of large works for a reduced chamber group [some Mahler song cycles, for example]. Here, we see him writing original music for a smaller ensemble: 1 Flute/Piccolo, 1 Oboe, 1 English Horn, 1 E-flat Clarinet, 1 Clarinet, 1 Bass Clarinet, 1Bassoon, 1 Contrabassoon, 2 Horns, and Strings ( 2 Violins, 1 Viola, 1 Cello, 1 Double Bass). This thinned ensemble help emphasize the counterpoint.
This work is a five-movements-in-one structure, and the separate tempo markings are:
