Attachment in Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA), or fondly known as, They Fucked Up Aang’s Character and Everyone Else’s Characterisations Around Him.
Disclaimer: Please find that this is me, eyeballing the characters and the shows after my ATLA rewatch, rereading of the post-war comics in the ATLA universe, watching The Legend of Aang, and whatever’s rattling in my head regarding the Star Wars (SW) universe. I’ll be talking about Aang’s characterisation and how attachments are being handled in both the ATLA and SW worlds. There will be criticisms and comparisons between the two, and as much as I can plunge my hands into them. Feel free to bounce if any of these aren’t your thing.
Now, despite everything that’s been said under my lengthy analysis, I’m fond of Aang. I’m not fond of several other things that’s been written about the lil dude by Bryke’s hand. Take that as you will.
Being in the ATLA fandom after rolling around in the SW fandom for years has opened my eyes to the fact that the writers of ATLA were bad in talking about the concept of worldly attachments, and that’s weird, considering Aang is supposed to be inspired by Buddism, where the Jedi Order was based on them too.
Bear in mind from here onwards that I will be talking in terms of the ATLA universe, with some SW as well.
IROH
Iroh telling Aang in Book 2 finale that well, it’s okay to basically abandon the Fully Realised Avatar state—the supposed powerful figure that bridges the human world and spirit world (as they repeatedly say in the show), the demigod-ish entity who should prioritise the balance of the world instead of letting their attachments cloud their judgement—and to instead pursue a selfish love in a world where it’s already unbalanced as it is. Let us give Iroh the benefit of the doubt:
He was a war general and the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation: his views on any Avatar matters are incomplete, at best. I would say shrewd, but that was when he was younger. He’s grown from there, according to ATLA themselves.
Let us add in: he had been to the Spirit World after Lu Ten’s, his beloved son, death. He probably knows some about the Avatar and any Avatar matters in order for Iroh to find his family in the Spirit World. He has to. The Spirit World is hunting ground for lost souls and souls who aren’t supposed to be there. Iroh thinks he knows enough to give counsel on the matters of attachment to Aang at that point.
In my personal opinion, Iroh claiming that Aang made the right choice to abandon the Fully Realised Avatar State in exchange of a crush Aang had on Katara is deeply flawed of Iroh, and he’s specifically written that way as a justification for the actions Aang made. It’s odd to think that Iroh, the man who was all about knowing what your true destiny and your duties are, would just callously agree with Aang abandoning the requirements it would take to do his job as an Avatar. Iroh’s the Grandmaster of the White Lotus, an organisation specifically to support the Avatar in world peace. You’d think that Iroh wouldn’t let Aang delay any more years by not (gently) going off on him for not achieving the Avatar State. But given how this is Aang’s Universe, the show’s gonna close one eye on that because Aang is the Main Character and he’s always right.
KATARA
Katara is a character of her own, and she’s filled with passion, determination, and love for everyone around her. She fights for the unfortunate, fights for the greater good and what she knows is right, and will do so at her own terms if no one agrees with her. She has her own tributes and flaws on what makes her Katara of the Southern Water Tribe, and not just an accessory to the Main Character. She’s someone everyone can look up to, especially the little girls who are growing up and trying to find out what they want to be for themselves. Katara is also, unfortunately for her, the first Girl of the Group.
So this is what Vivienne and Erika meant when they said that Charlie would make lots of mistakes in season 2...😭😭
Charlie, my girl. STAND THE HELL UP!!
and now I AM going to be a bitch, just because I can.
this is a VERY character critical post, so if you’re not okay with that, DO NOT READ. as always, my opinion only. just venting, not looking to be convinced.
Okay so I just finished watching the movie ‘Obsession’ since it’s gaining popularity right now and looking back at the TikToks of men SWEARING that Bear was not the villain genuinely pisses me off right now. Sure, he killed himself at the end to stop the chaos he created, but I HIGHLY doubt he did that for Nikki mainly because he knew she’d be in so much more anguish after she snapped back?? All of her friends dead because her guy best friend wanted her to love him. The scene where she was speaking through her subconscious while the entity was asleep said a lot about how selfish Bear really was. She begs him to free her while being in god knows what kind of agony and the only thing he replies with is “How bad is it to be with me.” IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU. Genuinely the creepiest thing about this is her independence and liveliness being stripped away and guys finding a reason to criticise her. Them laughing at the SA scene doesn’t surprise me tbh.
The Emilia POV gap
I’ve always wondered how a fanfic from Emilia’s POV would look in the gaps where we only have Subaru’s perspective. Starting in the throne room, then the duel, watching Julius brutalize Subaru, and sticking with her until he wakes up in bed in front of her. I think it would have been a reality check for her then and there. At least half an hour passed, probably more, and wouldn’t that duration plus Subaru honestly answering why he fought Julius have been enough for her to come to an understanding?
What I have a problem with is Tappei trying to paint Emilia’s actions as healthy or good, or Subaru coming back to apologize (while Emilia never did properly in the main timeline, not counting the LN 10 one) as him learning how to love properly. She knew how much Subaru wanted to be involved. There’s an unhealthy power dynamic between them. And considering everything established between them, her not having a single negative opinion about Julius just feels cold and unlike her. It’s selfish, and she never admits the extent of her selfishness toward Subaru the way he does toward her, which I think is why even some LN fans lean toward Rem, because at least there the relationship feels equal.
Privileges and apologies
Emilia’s insecurities and the racism she faces don’t prevent her from enjoying the privileges her status and Puck afford her. I truly believe she should have bowed her head once in apology. That simple act, as liege and friend who failed him, hurt him badly, and left him alone to deal with everything (and he pulled off some INSANE stunts, a huge contrast with the good-for-nothing child treatment she gave him), would have actually humanized her. But no, even in arc 4, while Subaru is dealing with hellish trials himself, she had to bring up his first broken promise, which was her hypocrisy again, because she was the one who abandoned him then, and she did far worse than merely leave his bedside. Even Subaru is pushed to telling her to stop bullying him. I would have been fine with all of it had Emilia not joked about it in arc 10.
The throne room from both sides
Why Emilia never said a thing about Julius’s rant, I do not know. Did she not realize how she was making Subaru feel? From Emilia’s end, it feels more obvious that she was hurting the other party. From Subaru’s end, her behavior is genuinely confusing: she just let Julius insult him over and over again and then publicly disowned him. Maybe Subaru had some lessons to learn, but in terms of morality or love, I don’t find arc 3 that appealing. In Emilia’s place, I’d feel extremely guilty. I blame Puck for it all. The sheer extent to which he caused so many people to suffer, chiefly Subaru and Emilia, is ridiculous, his one redeeming act being to protect her from Melakuera.
Idk if this is just me but the whole “Dad Bobby” thing is just soooo strange to me
This man is their manager. There are professional boundaries there. Outside of being friends, their relationship does not go any deeper than that. Also, he’s at most 10 years older than them, if even that.
Tbh it feels like there are some misogynistic undertones there. These girls do not need anyone to take care of them like that. They are grown women. Even if it’s not like that, a lot of the fics or “analyses” (it’s in quotations because so much of it is just projection of their own parental problems) that showcase that heavily bash Celine to the point where it even isn’t the original character anymore. And realistically, if Celine was a man this wouldn’t happen at all.
It just pisses me off and I needed to vent anonymously because I know for a fact i’m gonna get attacked if I say this in my own account 😭
