Pictured left: Morgan Harrington, age 20 (2009) Pictured right: Hannah Graham, age 18 (2014)
Morgan was a student at Virginia Tech when she disappeared on October 17th, 2009. On that day, Morgan and some friends travelled to the University of Virginia to attend a Metallica concert. During the opening act, Morgan left her friends to go use the restroom. At some point, she exited the arena and was unable to get back in due to a strict “no re-entry” policy. Morgan spoke with her friends on the phone at 8:48pm, telling them not to worry—she would find her own ride home.Unfortunately, Morgan never made it home and she was never heard from again after that phone call.
Around 3 months later, on January 26th, 2010, Morgan’s remains were found on a farm ten miles away from the concert arena. The police did not release many details about Morgan’s death, however, her parents confirmed that she had been a victim of homicide. There were not any known suspects at the time Morgan’s remains were found, but forensic testing revealed that DNA found on Morgan’s shirt matched DNA evidence that the police already had on file for an unsolved kidnapping and rape case that occurred in Fairfax, Virginia in September 2005. The victim of the 2005 attack was able to escape from her kidnapper, but the police were unable to locate him after she reported the attack.
Years passed, and both the 2005 kidnapping/rape case and Morgan’s 2009 murder remained unsolved. Then, on September 13th, 2014, another young girl went missing from the University of Virginia: 18 year-old Hannah Graham. Sometime during the night of September 12th, Hannah became separated from her friends while walking to a party. She was last heard from at 1:20am on the 13th, after texting a friend that she was lost. Less than a week later, police released surveillance footage from the university mall from the night of Hannah’s disappearance. In the video, Hannah is shown stumbling through the mall by herself when an older, unidentified man approaches her and puts his arm around her. Police were able to identify that man as Jesse L. Matthew Jr. He was taken into custody on September 24th and charged with kidnapping and intent to defile.
On September 29th, 2014, investigators announced that they found a forensic link between evidence taken from Matthew and the murder of Morgan Harrington. They also found a forensic link to the 2005 kidnapping and rape case in Fairfax. Hannah still remained missing, but police believed that they now had a serial rapist/killer in custody.
Hannah’s remains were found on October 18th, 2014, on an abandoned property in Albemarle County, Virginia. Matthew was subsequently charged with the kidnapping and rape for the 2005 case and with the murders of both Morgan and Hannah. In June of 2015, Matthew was given three life sentences for the 2005 attack. In March of 2016, he pleaded guilty to both Morgan and Hannah’s murders. Matthew will remain incarcerated for the rest of his life. [x]
In the shade, under the yew
In the shade under the yew America is dreaming. America, imbued with memory and The blood of your forebears - The ones you call father, mother, and the deciduous wood. The hiss Of a campfire. The old songs And the ones that came after. America, with your back turned; The visions fall behind thee - A wave, one hundred feet high. A swirling Of eyes and open mouths, all crying. Somebody's daughter has followed a thread Back to a slaughter. Around her feet A crawling; an army of black bodies; Something viscous and appalling. It is hard to move and harder to breathe. Someone shouts, "stand and fight!" But nobody hears. They are busy with grieving.
America - caught in the wilds between Dreams and waking. America - a portait in sleep paralysis. In the shade under the yew A fruit drops into your mouth. The leaves whisper among themselves And ask if you will die or heave; Doubt or believe. When you make a bed From poisoned needles you must Be prepared to feel the sting. Either that, or you anaesthetise And deny yourself of everything. You can stay complacent, dull, unmoved; Or go back to the elder tales, Find them embedded in the roots. Twisted, gnarled; grown into the bark - You recall your forebears: The dust, The target, and the trembling. Perhaps then you'll recognise them there, Perhaps then you'll hear them calling- "Awake. Awake. Awake."

Glossary
Yew Tree: A poisonous evergreen tree, said to have magical properties. They are often symbols of immortality, rebirth, transformation, and protection against evil, connecting with ancestors, dreaming, heightening psychic abilities, and olde magick. Yew is used in spells to raise the spirits of the dead. Yew trees are virtually immortal due to their biology, and are therefore symbolic of the sum of all wisdom. As the culmination of the spiritual journey, the ultimate lesson of the yew is the transcendence of death. [Source 1] [Source 2].
And everyone knows DAMN well if this was Black Lives Matter protests right now happening in Charlottesville VA they would of shut this shit down last night and the jail would be running over. Yet they’ve only arrested (ONE) O N E !!!! white supremacists since this is been going down.
Please be aware of what is happening in Charlottesville, Virginia right now.
Yesterday I packed up my car, picked Bryce up in Greensboro, and went right on down the road to Charlottesville, VA… this time to stay! Super fun (and unreal!) feeling.
This morning I took class at the PB studio and met with the owner afterward who is just so so nice and I’m so happy to be able to teach there when I start my job and get settled. It took us a while to get out of the studio after class because everyone wanted to talk to her and it just seems like a great community that I’m already proud to be a part of. I got my nails done afterward (vacation nails, hay) and then I went to the library to try and get a library card and now I’m at Whole Foods eating $10 worth of hot bar vegetables (which is a crime) and trying to not to die of hunger waiting for Bryce to get back for lunch.
What I mean to say by this post is that I am currently living my best life and I am so giddy over this new adventure. I am moving out of recruiting for the first time in 5 years and will be working in employer relations and all that is standing between me and this perfect match is a week of beach time… which is noooot too bad.
Happy Friday, my friends.
bless brad heaton for being such an amazing photographer
