Thinking about Sectoids and doing the “mind food tasting”, it would be a funny-ish way of accidentally learning/teaching someone they’re allergic to a food.

Sectoid: That’s interesting. Usually that vegetable has a bite and leaves a tingling aftertaste.

Person: What are you talking about?

Sectoid: When I do this with Jeremiah and he had the exact same wrap, the taste is sharp and makes his mouth tingly. Like eating something spicy. It’s an interesting feeling but the way it tastes with you is also nice! I’m experiencing new flavor profiles!

Person: Mate… I think Jeremiah is allergic… That vegetable isn’t supposed to taste “spicy.”

Sectoid:… oh no.

imo Xcom: chimera squad is a good game, but it's not a good Xcom game.

think about some things that defined xcom from the 90's to 2016:

-Permadeath

-Large engagements that had you switching between searching and destroying

-Slow paced campaigns

-research trees that needed things from the tactical layer to progress

-base building!

-having your whole team take their turn at once!!!

-(for the reboots) CUSTOMIZATION!!!!!!

these are the things that make Xcom what it is and chimera squad has none of these! it's more akin to the tactical layer of empire of sin, all CQC, initiative system, combat that puts you directly into the fighting.

i get it wasn't supposed to be a full Xcom game and i get it was supposed to be experimental but we've gone ten years on a cliffhanger since Xcom 2 (and let's be honest parts of xcom 2 have not aged well cough cough it's a buggy game cough) and chimera squad could have been something more.

i think they should have just made it into a generic police game or made their own new setting for it instead of having it pose as an Xcom game when it's really not...

also i miss my goat central/bradford.

XCOM: Chimera Squad is really fun. Too short, but a fun tactical strategy game with good world building, character stuff, and flavor. Also, Terminal and Patchwork are clearly fucking.

More fun snek girl facts: Torque can use her tongue pull ability on allies as well as enemies, which can make for some very useful mobility. Terminal in particular loves it; she'll shout "Wheeeee, again!" While, you know, in the middle of a raid against heavily armed organized criminals.

"snake woman can pull ppl around with her tongue including allies" is not something I expected to read and for sure wasn't expecting the "im gonna be dead soon like my family lol gonna go out fighting" medic gal to treat the mid-combat tongue yoinking like a carnival ride.

That's so cute tho. Local venomous snek girl also gives tongue hugs <3 deadly or otherwise <3 <3

God, I would love it if they announced a Mass Effect title that was literally any other subgenre than Action/Shooter, at least something mostly different in focus/gameplay than the originals.

My hope would be an XCOM-like, especially if it was more like Chimera Squad which was very character driven.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered a Mass Effect conversion mod for that game…

i've been seized by the urge to write an essay (i now realize i already wrote a mini-essay in this post lol) about why the story of Gray Phoenix (one of the main enemy factions in XCOM: Chimera Squad (which is a story i have... mixed but leaning positive feelings on, maybe more on that in another post, but the tl;dr is that the worldbuilding is a really cool premise but the implementation is you playing as a police force in a way that could've been handled worse but also could've been handled better)) is, more than anything else, a tragedy, particularly when considering that (spoilers, also cw for semi-dark story stuff)

a lot of the more morally ambiguous things they did, are quite possibly things they were manipulated into doing by Shrike. Not that this absolves them of responsibility for the things they did but considering that Shrike was pulling the strings behind all three enemy groups, it seems very likely they saw Gray Phoenix going "we want to leave" and manipulated them into being more violent than they would otherwise have been. And also like... look at the stuff Gray Phoenix gets up to in the investigations compared to the other groups. Sacred Coil kidnaps humans, uses them in gene experiments to make a pandemic spread to multiple species, and then disposes of them. The Progeny kidnap people in order to brainwash and mind-control them, as well as stealing technology to take control of aliens living peacefully. Gray Phoenix, uh... helps their friends and family secretly join them in their plan to escape the planet, and steals food resources and redistributes them. Is anyone else seeing the contrast here? and I'm gonna be honest, I really think Reclamation and Chimera Squad could've handled the situation better. Like, as soon as you realized "wait, they aren't kidnapping aliens, the aliens are going along with them willingly," maybe reconsider some of your other assumptions about the situation??? maybe??? at least on the plus side you've got plenty of options to non-lethally defeat enemies so you can make sure that no one in Gray Phoenix dies (outside of Xel sacrificing herself to save the city if you do their investigation last, and THAT'S definitely going to come up in the essay if i write it.)
