Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia) is a tropical herb or shrub cultivated in many countries for its multipurpose value. As fodder, ornamental, fuel, compost, land demarcation, soil erosion control, soil remediation, building materials and even shelter for poultry. When considering these for a Syntropic Agroforestry system it’s good to take note that post-flowering cuttings result in higher yields than pre-flowering cuttings. I did several IPM's with neem, BT, and various herbs this year in hopes to avoid these catipillars. It wasn't enough. Almost every morning eggs would be found on the leaves of the plants, removed and burned, and then plants would be inspected for any signs of hatching. It sucks when all your work is effected by something you tried preventing in the first place. Not every plant is effected as bad, but ive had to remove buds the size of my hand on several occasions. Anyone have a solution to this that has worked for them? In the future i think mosquito netting is the only other option. Finally starting to get the hang of filming some of my daily activities. Not the easiest thing to remember to do when there is so much actual work staring at you in the face. Roughly every other month for the past 2.5 years since acquiring this property, I’ve been chopping and dropping the weeds in order to rebuild the soils health as opposed to the western method of covering what’s bad with something good like its normally done in raised beds. Once you know what makes good soil, improving the health of a soil will for sure take time and and quite a bit patience. Soil degradation can result from the overuse of heavy farming equipment that compacts soils and makes it impossible for roots to grow. The lack of rotating crops over time will eventually deplete the soil of essential nutrients. Poor drainage will drown out root systems. There must be enough organic matter to facilitate chemical transfer of carbon as an energy source for the soil microbes. Microbes are necessary to decompose organic matter to make available chemical ions that must by taken up into the plant. Managing soils to maintain health and quality is as much a science as it is an art. Good soil aggregation—the minerals, air, water and organic matter—is essential for maintaining good soil structure that enables adequate air exchange and water drainage. For most of our history, the land on which we grow crops must have appeared to be inexhaustible. But it’s now far from the case. As the world’s population continues to grow, healthy and productive soil is rapidly becoming a scarce resource. Another day spent mulching our trees now that the rain season has started. Everything breaks down a lot faster and this also helps retain a level of moisture in the soil while feeding the microbes. This is something a lot of people don’t realize about reforestation. It’s really not as simple as just getting trees in the ground. If they aren’t guaranteed a bit of care and protection to reach maturity, it’s almost pointless. Kind of difficult to show how much work was done this morning when everything is green 😅 We spent the morning chopping and dropping weeds and ferns in order to replenish the soil on this property. Barely 3 inches before hitting gravel and rock when we first started working on this property. And just by mulching with what already grows on the property over the years, the land is not able to sustain small trees and bushes.
