Obsessively rewatching certain scenes from the DA1 movie for fic purposes and ... am I seeing this wrong? Am I going crazy? Is it really implied that Thomas (albeit inadvertently) set the wheels in motion for the raid to happen; once again responsible for making his own misery?
Thomas: Excuse me, sir? My name's Barrow. If someone comes looking for me, could you tell him I've gone? Publican: Shall I say where to? Thomas: Turton's. Webster: Never mind that.
Thomas and Webster speak at the same time; it seems as if Webster were trying to speak over Thomas. The publican gives them a very strange look as they leave. Cut to the next scene and Thomas' reaction as they enter Turton's:
Thomas: I can't believe this. I've never seen anything like it.
Now hear me out: Thomas totally gets that he's being hit on, it's the subtext that goes all the way over his head.
How are you supposed to know not to tell people you're going to an underground gay nightclub when you don't know what an underground gay nightclub even is? Also, all of this is happening in York where Thomas isn't local. He probably thought Turton's was just another pub or bar down the road, hence no qualms to mention it to the publican, name and all. And with Webster being as un-subtle as he is, and the publican looking as skeptical as he does, it might have set some wheels in motion ... wheels of the Black Marias, unfortunately.
If my reading is correct, that adds a whole new layer of tragedy to the story. A whole new layer of homophobia too (and just so we're clear, I don't mean the overt "arrested for dancing the tango with another man" type of homophobia) ... and it makes me want to scream and rant (alright, I'm already ranting) and tear my hair out.
