DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE
I'm sorry I can't hear you over the sound of my own screaming
We need to talk about this.
And why this is a big fucking deal.
Being a servant requires the constant care of your body, but to the betterment of the family, not yourself. As a footman, Thomas was the pride of the staff. But the art of being a footman and serving dinner was to be so unobtrusive that you were barely noticed. Throughout Thomas' tenure at Downton Abbey, he has consistently worn his glove because without it he was seen as indecent. Any time that he has worn the glove off in front of others, it has been because he's been extremely ill or fragile. In fact, the sight of him without a glove was almost like him being undressed. Despite it being a relatively small piece of clothing, it held a great deal of significance both for his employment and his fragile self-esteem.
In season 6 episode 8, we get a glimpse of thomas post 'incident' without his glove:
The wound, while nowhere near as devastating as Season 2, is still clearly enough to cause him embaressement and reproach if seen by Carson or the family. But in the The Grand Finale, Thomas is seen side by side with the man who loves him, without a glove, holding a glass of champagne, and what is more, his wound has been clearly been attended to.
Plastic surgery in the 20's-30's was becoming increasingly popular, both because of the flapper movement and the after effects of WW1. Despite there being a bounty of soldiers who were desperate to reconstruct themselves, plastic surgery was specifically for the elite.
Where am I going with this?
I believe that Guy paid for Thomas to have corrective surgery on his war wound, which allows him to walk around without his glove off.
Thomas returns to Downton Abbey, with pride being able to mingle with Guy upstairs, and does so without concealing his hand from the family.
The only way that Thomas is allowed to go upstairs is if Guy allows it. Thus, not only is Guy paying for Thomas to have a better life, he's ensuring that others respect him too.
And that's why this is a big fucking deal.
and he won :)
Some portraits I've made of Lady Mary, Mr Barrow and Mr Dexter! :3
if Harold entered Guy's room instead
Was completely alone at the cinema so had to capture my favourite moment of the entire film.
I would have taken 2 hours of them gallivanting around as a gay trio.
