Remus woke with the sleeping bag sticking to his clammy skin and his head mushy as a squashed marsmallow in the hot tent. Groaning, he felt through the crack beside the inflatable matress and found a lukewarm bottle of water. Sitting up to drink with a wave of nausea, he changed his mind, screwed the cork back on and started rummaging trough his bag for painkillers instead. He knew he needed to hydrate, but he was unsure if he could hold more than one mothfull down, so he wanted to save it until he found them.

He had had one beer yesterday and then sipped half of Sirius. It was not that. Maybe it was just the heat? Or the three days full of fun but tiring activities with his friends finally catching up to him?

He dragged himself out of the tent to see Sirius already preparing breakfast.

"Oh, baby", Sirius said with a knowing sad smile and patted the sitting log in front of him.

With a thankfull grunt Remus collapsed in his boyfriend's lap and Sirius started pressing his fingers into shoulders that Remus hadn't even realised were tense.

James came bouncing. "Ready to head for the beach? Or have you seen anything else you want to try? There were tons in the brochure."

"We're thinking a slow day today", Sirius quickly answered, "probably laze here until noon, maybe the whole day."

Still unable to open his eyes due to Sirius' wonderfull fingers on his neck, Remus shook his head. He didn't want to ruin their vaccation.

"Are you sure?" Sirius stopped massaging, leaned forward and questioningly sought Remus gaze. Remus unwillingly opened his eyes to the head-splitting sunlight, and gritted his teeth.

"You don't have to stay here for my sake."

"The Aquarium then?" Sirius slowly suggested. "I want to see the sharks."

Spending the day in an air-conditioned, dim space with a lot of sitting benches sounded great. Remus knew full well Sirius only now had caught an interest in marine life, but when James said "The Aquarium it is!" he didn't muster a protest, just turned around in Sirius' arms and kissed him.

Chronically ill Remus Lupin is so important to me. Remus has a cane, he has back issues, he can barely get out of bed on most days. But still that man will rail his husband no matter what! Like give me sex positive but also chronic pain Moony- you cowards!

“For what?” Sirius asks. When Remus looks at him, he finds real confusion there.

“For everything,” he says. “For being here.”

“There’s nowhere else to be,” Sirius says.

Remus, in a state of fear accompanied by a desperate need to not hurt Sirius, does hurt Sirius. He leaves him, out of the blue, and finds himself experiencing remorse more than he ever has before. Eight months were over, because of his choices. He needed to live with that. Or not.

Does anyone else ever think about Remus having dog-shifter Sirius trained to be his service dog?

Like just imagine that Sirius both as Padfoot and as himself will sometimes notice that something about Remus is off. If he isn't Padfoot, then he can just tell Remus verbally and help him prepare for it but when he is, he notices it faster because of his heightened senses.
