Right so gimme some advice, tumblr. I was talking about the queer flag with my cishet mother and the conversation went like this.
Mum: Didn't they make one with something for cis people added? Me: ...There is a cis people flag yes, but it was made by transphobes. Mum: Oh... Well if I added a part of it to the queer flag to fly it over my house that wouldn't be my intent. I'm proud to be an ally! Me: You want to very loudly proclaim "I'm not trans!" Why do you think that is? Mum: It's so other cis people will see the flag and know there's another cis person supporting queer rights, so they should too. Like, if they were on the fence about it, it might influence them in the right direction. Me: Why do they need a cis person to be openly supportive? What's wrong with all the queer people already loudly supporting each other? Mum: Nothing, it's just I'm not queer so it wouldn't be right to just fly the queer flag. Me: Why not? Mum: It would be dishonest. Me, getting frustrated: So it would be more honest to slap your transphobic mark onto the queer flag? Mum: But that wouldn't be my intent!
Conversation went round in circles from there and while she apologised and said she accepted she was wrong, she also didn't understand why. Any tips on what to say to get her to understand?
