The Black Power Mixtape 1967â1975 (Göran Olsson, 2011)
August 22, 1989 - Huey P. Newton, revolutionary socialist and leader of the Black Panther Party, was assassinated on this day in 1989. The Black Panther Party rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s for raising the revolutionary consciousness of the oppressed Black communities in the United States. Newtonâs writings and leadership have left a permanent mark on the Black liberation movement and the socialist movement broadly. Newton elevated the Panthers to the role of internationalist revolutionary socialists who sought to fight US imperialism in order to liberate the most oppressed communities within the country. Newton, like many others in the Black liberation movement, was a target of the FBIâs COINTELPRO, which sought to sow division between revolutionary leaders and organizations. [link]
In a memo dated March 4, 1968, the FBI outlined its goals regarding Black nationalist groups, explicitly stating the need to prevent the rise of a leader who could unify and electrify the Black nationalist movement. The exact words were:
"Prevent the rise of a 'messiah' who could unify and electrify the militant black nationalist movement. Malcolm X might have been such a 'messiah'; he is the martyr of the movement today. Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, and Elijah Muhammad all aspire to this position."
Iâm old enough to remember way back in 2018 when the NYPD got busted spying on Muslims, and how they illegally infiltrated Muslim communities + mosques, and that their actions were unethical, unlawful and ultimately found to be unconstitutional.
And now that same NYPD is suppressing pro-Palestinian protests and using unreasonable force against college students whose demands are for peace, a ceasefire and an end to the war crimes + genocide being inflicted on Palestinians by Israel.
Never forget that under the guise of fighting âterrorism,â police forces around the country have always been deeply Islamophobic, but especially the NYPD.
And now theyâre doing this against college students.
The protesters are American taxpayers, citizens (you donât have to be a citizen to be a taxpayer) activists, and college students. And cowardly university presidents, mayors, governors and the police are treating them like armed insurrectionsâexcept on January 6th law enforcement actually treated armed insurrectionists much better than unarmed college protesters.
America, where armed white nationalistsâliterally fomenting an insurrectionâget treated with more equity, dignity and respect than peaceful college students who are exercising their constitutionally protected right to protest against war and genocide.
America, where white guys doing the Nazi salute while chanting âJews will not replace usâ is considered protected free speech, but college students saying âfrom the river to the sea Palestine will be freeâ is somehow violent antisemitic hate speech. Completely backwards.

Why Was Fred Hampton So Feared By The Government?
In October 1969, the FBI and Chicago PD raided the Black Panthers Chicago HQ. The shotgun-blasted door is on exhibit at the DuSable Black History Museum, a loan from none other than Kerry James Marshall.
