Picking classes for your first year of college can be tricky because it is so different from the way you structure your high school classes. There so much that goes unsaid and it takes a lot of trial and error. After finishing my freshman year and having two semesters to pick a schedule I've learned some tips to keep in mind when creating your schedule.
Choose the average course load: Coming from high school you might be very tempted to pick a heavier course load because you're used to doing twice that much in high school. It's tempting, but it's ultimately the freshman pitfall. Get your bearings before you decide to start stacking up on classes. Usually, 4-5 classes are the average and it will serve you well. Remember college classes are not like high school classes, if you have 4 classes it means you will still have a lot of outside studying on your own to do, so trust me you won’t have time to be bored
Don't just choose major classes: As a freshman, the odds are VERY high that you will switch your major and while you definitely want to try at least one of your major classes, keep your schedule balanced and try to get a taste of what the school has to offer. You never know you might walk into a class not knowing anything and end up changing your major.
Think about the class structure: A common mistake a lot of students make when picking their freshman schedule is picking classes with the same class structure and then getting too overwhelmed. It a good rule to try to mix in classes that have different structures. So mix your lecture heavy classes with some more practical creative classes or stem classes. It will save your brain from overloading when you have to write five essays because you choose all humanities classes :)
Time your classes carefully: think about what you prefer and when your peak productive hours are. If you're an early bird, it makes sense to stack your classes in the mornings and have your afternoons free or vice versa. Always leave room for lunch and breaks between classes for socializing. It's hard to get it perfect but always think about how your days will play out based on how you schedule your classes.
Get your gen-eds out of the way: this one might seem obvious but with a plethora of courses a lot of people don't end up taking all their gen-ed courses and find that before they graduate there's that one gen ed course they forgot to take. Of course, it's not the end of the world, but it can be helpful to find a list of all you gen ed courses required to graduate and make sure you’re sprinkling them in liberally through your course load freshman and sophomore year.
College can be a stressful especially as a freshman but picking out your classes should be fun and make you excited to further your education. If your college student let me know what you would have done differently when picking your classes for freshman year.
