Okay so I’m gonna talk a little about the Old Farts™
Like, Valka is the leader of the Resistance, okay? But what’s his backstory like? Wellllllll, he really gives me the impression of a “Sloth killed my wife!” kind of vibe so I thought what if Sloth really did kill his wife. But what if we took that further and Valka and his wife were founding members of the Resistance, which formed after the death of Valka’s two kids at the hands of Sloth’s forces!
Ok so what happened was this - Valka was an engineer and was one of the Neopets initially hired to build the Virtupets Space Station (might change depending on the AU). There he met his wife, who was also an engineer, and who challenged many of his preconceptions about women, which fascinated him. He had also taken on an apprentice at this time, but more about that lad later.
When Dr. Sloth decided to take control of the operation by force, a bunch of the builders resisted. Valka, having been raised on war stories by his military father, was one of the loudest voices. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Sloth’s forces (led either by Gormos or his predecessor, depending on the AU) tried to “calm” the protestors, and his children were killed.
The workers were summarily rounded up and chastised, then work continued on as normal, but a bunch of them were so unhappy that they voted Valka leader and escaped to form The Resistance, which was a bunch of discontented adults who thought they were fighting for freedom from tyranny.
Of course, things changed, they got picked off one by one, etc., and so their numbers dwindled. Valka and his wife were transformed by the loss of their children into efficient killers. One of the thoughts that kept them going was that after the war, they would retire to the surface and have more children. But eventually she ended up dead. Quite how is up for debate, but Valka very much blames Sloth for it. All of the kindness and gentleness and understandingness that was left got torn out of him when his wife died.
Fast forward to a time when the last female is dead (more on that later as well)! The Resistance is down to its last four members. Morale is low. Valka, heart hardened by his need for revenge, makes an order. If they come across any infants at risk of being “brainwashed” by Sloth and his minions they must rescue said infants, and if possible kill the guardians. They needed more soldiers, after all, and what better way to make sure they’re raised properly than to remove them from the toxic environment Sloth’s minions had built for them!
So, about those kids. They will be referred to from here on as “the foundlings”. Valka’s father wasn’t the best role model for fatherly virtues. He was an alcoholic veteran with PTSD and no support, and would beat his son for the slightest breach of discipline. Those beatings left a lasting impression, which Valka decided would be a good way for him to educate the foundlings. He picked on Parlax because of an unconscious bias against split Neopets, possibly later picked up on the fact that Parlax is gay (Valka is a homophobe)
