POSITIVELY CANUCKS: FIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM THE GAME
Date: March 22, 2025
Game: VAN@NYR
Final score: 5-3 L
Dakota after scoring his 5th goal of the season.
📸 Sarah Stier
There's no denying: this one hurt. In another must-win game primed for elevated emotional implications, the Canucks, again, took us on a rollercoaster and, again, it ended in a heartbreaking loss (and likely more injuries to add to the already ridiculously long injury list *heavy sigh*).
Despite outplaying the Rangers for almost the entire game and *deserving* that win - perhaps more than any other game this season (shots on goal were 39-12 in our favor, for crying out loud. That's our season high!) - the hockey gods laughed and said, "Nice try!"
There are still things to celebrate, though. Let's smile through our angry tears together and go over what was good, even if it's not a lot. First, a quick look at the game stats.
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS SAY? 📊
This just in: the Canucks played very well! Here are the highlights as reported by Auriel @hughesybear
The on-ice 5v5 shot attempt differential was positive for every Canucks skater, meaning that each skater contributed to driving play - ranging from holding their own to absolutely dominating the Rangers.
Canucks had 12 5v5 high-danger scoring chances to the Rangers’ 3 (doing a good job at generating dangerous chances while limiting the opposition).
Noted faceoff specialist post-Feb. 1st Elias Pettersson won 5/7 faceoffs (including two against J.T. Miller) for a 71.43% faceoff win rate. Since Feb. 1st, he has a 53.18% win rate in the dot, stepping up in an area this team desperately needs help with.
Quinn had 9 shots alone in this game. Compare that to the Rangers' total 8 at 5v5!
Here are five (yes, five! And it could have been more!) things that were GOOD:
GREATEST HITS
🔗NHL Records
With his first hit of the game, Kiefer OFFICIALLY surpassed Jeremy Lauzon for the record of highest number of hits in a single season. Congrats, Kief!!! And he wasn’t done there. He tallied seven hits in the first period alone and finished the game with 12 hits total. This brought his hit count to a whopping 395 on the season. Can’t wait to see how high he climbs! 🥊
DAK ATTACK
Dakota cellies in front of a particularly displeased Rangers fan.
gif by Auriel @hughesybear
After several games of near goals and hit posts and blocked shots, Dakota FINALLY got one into the net! It’s been a rough season for him, especially after last year; this is only his fifth goal in his 45 games played. But he got a late start due to his cancer treatment recovery, so if anybody on this team deserves some grace, it’s Dakota. It was awesome (and a bit cathartic) to see him get another goal. Perhaps even more awesome was his celly staredown into the Ranger crowd behind the net. Dakota doesn’t give a fuck! 🖕
HE’S SO HOT RIGHT NOW!
A rare on-ice smile from Quinn as he cellies with Brock.

Brock's on fire! He tallied another goal, bringing him to five goals in his last three games. He’s now tied with Jake for most goals this season (23). This was also Brock's 202nd career goal, pushing him above Bo Horvat into 8th place for total franchise goals. Let’s hope his scoring streak continues through the rest of the season. We need as many Brockstar goals as we can get right now. 🙏
HUGHES MAKES (MORE) HISTORY

📸 Jared Silber
With his ankle-breaking primary assist on Dakota’s first period goal, Quinn tallied his 400th career point. Some fun facts about this milestone: He’s the second-fastest player in his 2018 draft class to reach this number, following his buddy Brady Tkachuk. His points are *perfectly* split, with 200 home game points and 200 away game points (how’s THAT for consistency?). And he's the seventh-fastest NHL defenseman EVER to reach 400 points. Even his records break records. With nine more points, he will tie Alex Edler for most points by a Canucks defenseman. With 10 more points - which seems very feasible for him to do this season - he will take the top spot and solidify himself as the most productive defenseman in franchise history. No franchise record - defenseman or not - is safe with Quinn Hughes on the roster. 🥇
MANCINI MOMENTS
Mancini messes with Miller and checks Rempe.
gifs by Auriel @hughesybear
Please indulge me in praising our newest baby cow defenseman. In a season filled with turmoil, one of the more surprising turnarounds we have had is our defensive core. Victor had a pretty solid game as our youngest d-man (playing at his old stomping grounds, no less!), even though the score sheet may not fully reflect it. With that being said, the score sheet *did* have him with most d-man hits (3)! And our strongest Canuck (according to Mysie) did some things us fans love to see: tying up Miller at the net and taking down (former teammate) Rempe. 😤
BONUS: LAUGHING THROUGH THE PAIN
Gifs and words provided by Auriel @hughesybear
With the memory of Riftgate 2024 made fresh in everyone's minds as EP40's Canucks faced off against J.T. Miller's new (and old) team, everyone was waiting to see the two players literally face off as well. Except the first three times they lined up against one another, one of them was waved out and a teammate had to take their place (Brock won the second one he took against Miller). The first actual PeteyMillsy faceoff didn't come until the second period, and it was because Brock was the one who initially lined up to take the draw but was waved out, causing Petey to come in. Petey won his two faceoffs against Miller. (Aside from Blue @captainlexapro: It seems only fitting - and in true Canucks fashion - that it took several tries to get the long-awaited divorcé faceoff. Refs had to follow the script to build up all of that THRILLING anticipation 😉).
Chins up, Nucks fans! It’s not over yet. And even if we just end up cheering for more of our Abby boys getting a shot in the show the rest of the way (Curse™️ is gonna Curse™️), let's have some fun while we're at it. 💚

Part 12
Just as all her students enter the classroom, Jenna excitedly stands up from her desk, ready to explain a new topic.
“Genshin character designs are bad.”
You really can’t navigate through the Genshin fandom without hearing this take. It’s stale at this point, but it’s…. also true. Except that’s usually not what people are actually saying. The true question up for debate: Are Genshin character designs ugly?
It irks me because there is validity to the original statement, and yet the conversation immediately moves into the territory of strictly opinion, leaving the true discussion never to be had.
So I’m having it… with myself…. in the form of a long post, because actually I find Genshin an interesting character design case study.
12 Days of Manga 2022
Day 4: Top 3 Shonen
Aka... the Shonen Jump award... Yes I am a hypocrit who complains when people only ever read stuff from Shonen Jump/Viz but also it’s the best deal in comics and it would seem I ONLY read shonen from them this year so.... to continue to be incredibly basic:
1) Akane-Banashi by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Mou from Shonen Jump (T: Stephen Paul L: Snir Aharon)
[ID: Japanese Cover for Akane Banashi Vol 1. Akane wears a pink floral Haori/Kimono jacket over the top of her school uniform. She points a closed fan outwards and pulls a goofy expression. Behind her are panels displaying scenes of Tokyo as well as her Father performing Rakugo]
“Shinta Arakawa wants nothing more than to pass his shin'uchi exam-the test that would make him a top-rank headliner and master storyteller in the traditional Japanese art of rakugo. His daughter Akane Osaki is his biggest fan, and even practices the same performances while watching him behind the closed door to his study. When rakugo master Issho Arakawa expels everyone after the exam with no explanation, a fire is lit inside Akane. From that day forth, she has had one goal-to avenge her father and prove his art was worthy of the title of shin'uchi.
Akane unintentionally stirs up the specter of scandal when she's discovered taking informal lessons from her father's former teacher, Shiguma Arakawa. But she's about to make even bigger waves, because her first step in climbing the ranks of rakugo performer from zenza opening act to shin'uchi headliner is exchanging her secret lessons for formal training. And she'll still have to finish high school and navigate her relationship with Shiguma's existing apprentices, all while learning that becoming a stellar rakugo performer takes much more than just being good at performing!’
This series has been making it into a lot of people’s top 10s this year and justifiably so. The series stands out from the usual Shonen Jump fair, not just due to its female protagonist, but also how at its heart it’s an educational slice of life. Sure, it maintains those shonen tropes of following your dreams no matter what, but Akane’s dreams are far more realistic than becoming hokage or curing your sister from being a demon or even winning the sports ball world cup! She just wants to become a top level Rakugo performer, something reasonable and possible to achieve. Okay, the whole “seeking revenge for the way her father was treated” is very Shonen, but equally Theatre Kids are just Like That(TM). In many ways, that attitude is what makes her such a realsitic character. I’ve seen some say that she’s a little bland, but I think it’s more that she’s not a caricature of something we’ve seen a thousand times before. Akane feels like a girl I could have met at my Drama Club, and that’s great!
The thing that really stands out to me though is the way Mou’s artwork helps to emphasise that this is a story about story telling! I’m always a fan of seeing an art style change as a way of ehancing story telling and scene adaption and Mou shows a real master class in this as they swap between a contempoary manga style, and one clearly inspired by traditonal japanese ink painting. It not only helps differentiate between what is ‘real life’ and what is ‘Rakugo’ but it also makes the book more visually engaging and apealing.
In recent chapters, we’ve also seen this come into being as a way of giving more information about the characters and the nature of their performances. I’m very excited to see where this goes, and how the style develops as the series goes on. After all! We’re only on chapter 42! There’s plenty more left to go.
I’ve also been very interested in Paul’s localisation choices throughout the series. It must have been a lot of hardwork to make sure that the visual puns for the Rakugo stayed, and I wonder how much of the translation is Paul’s own personal translations, and how much is established rakugo? There must have been a lot of research involved in preparing for this series, and being able to get it out on a Simulpub schedule is truly impressive! If anyone can point me towards interviews about the process of translating this series, I would be very grateful.
It’s also not often an SJ series keeps honorifics in, even though it makes sense for a series so deeply centered in Japanese Culture. I don’t think Manga has to be culturally educational, but I think that is definetly one of the appeals of it: especially for younger readers. International theatre traditons are not something commonly taught in schools, and whilst I did have a tiny bit of a grounding in Japanese Theatre Tradition thanks to a combination of Crash Course Theatre* and Case File no. 221: Kabukicho** it’s been so much fun to learn more about the history of the medium and the art as a whole!
I think some of the more recent chapters have been perhaps trying a little too hard to ‘say something’ about gender in the industry, and I’d rather we had a little more show and little less tell, but on the whole I’ve been really enjoying the series and know that my past teenage theatre-kid-weeaboo self would have been eating it up with a spoon!
Now if Akane could get some female friends, that would be great too.
*Crash Course Theatre does not cover Rakugo, but it does cover Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku and is absolutely worth checking out! But prepare for mispronouciations.
** a modern day Sherlock Holmes adaption in which he presents all his deductions through the art of Rakugo. David Wald is one of my favourite ever Mrs Hudsons but I had to drop it because the show did my girl Mary Morstan so dirty
I just discovered your blog, and I'm in LOVE with your writing! I'm completely obsessed with Familiar, so if it's not to much to ask, could you write a continuation? Thank you so much, your snippets and prompts are greatly appreciated!!
Familiar - Pt 2
First part here
On a scale of one to ten, this was either a -2 or a 12 on the good idea scale. Hero double-checked the address Villain had sent her before looking back at the tiny house. The paint was peeling, steps were rotting and that roof was definitely of the leaking sort. Somehow, she had expected Villain to live on the rich side of town.
When he had invited her over to work on their assignment, her thoughts had been torn between screaming trap and find some evidence. The second side won. If there wasn’t anything in there to prove who Villain really was… Well, she’d have to find another way of getting proof to show the authorities. She knocked and noted the cracked windows to her side. After a few seconds, Villain opened the door.
“Hey, I’m glad you could make it. Come on in.” He led her down the musty hall towards a suspiciously normal bedroom. “Thanks again for making the trek all the way over here. My mom hasn’t been doing too well recently, and I’m trying not to leave her alone for too long.”
“Of course, I get it.” Hero let her eyes trail over the spartan room. The only furniture was a bed and two chairs beside a fold-up table covered with books and scribblers. Funny, the number of times Villain escaped from her with stolen cash made her think he’d at least have better furniture. Or a safe to put the money in. Maybe it was hiding in the closet? Although in this neighbourhood, keeping money lying around might not be the brightest idea. “It’s good that you’re taking care of her.”
He nodded, avoiding her gaze and moving his stuff from the table to the floor. “Hopefully, this next surgery will be the one that works.”
“Yeah, it’s tough watching people you love go through painful things. My sister has a heart problem right now, and it’s terrifying to watch her energy come and go.” Shut up! Stop telling him personal things. “Yeah.” She finished lamely.
Their gazes locked in understanding. Hero was the first to break away. “Ready to start the pain?”

Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada
Bizzarrini SpA was founded in Livorno by the talented Italian engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, who previously worked on sports cars Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Iso Rivolta. In 1964 he created the Iso Grifo A3 / C racing prototype and decided to launch it into series production. In order not to share the profit with Renzo Rivolta, Bizzarrini renamed the supercar Bizzarrini 5300 GT. In 1966, a second smaller model, the Bizzarrini Europa, appeared. Having invested all the funds in high-tech development and participation in Le Mans, Bizzarrini was unable to properly organize the business and went bankrupt in 1969, having produced less than 200 cars. In the 90s and 2000s. Several concepts were built under the Bizzarrini brand, but none of them went on sale.

This supercar was designed by engineer Giotto Bizzarrini for Iso Rivolta and was originally called the Iso Grifo A3 / C. Structurally, the car was a continuation of the 1963 Iso Rivolta production model, which had a monocoque instead of a separate chassis, double wishbone front suspension and a DeDion rear axle.

Bizzarrini only shortened the wheelbase to 2,450mm and propelled the Chevrolet V8's 5.4-liter engine as far away from the front axle as possible to ensure optimal weight distribution. Then he turned to the designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, then at the Bertone studio, and the result of their collaboration was one of the most beautiful Italian cars of the 60s.

Bizzarrini created the Grifo A3 / C for endurance racing, and he had a hard time convincing Renzo Rivolta, a supporter of moderate 2 + 2 sports cars, to fund his project. However, during its debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1963, the Grifo A3 / C prototype was admired and sold immediately, then the American Ed Hughes ordered such a car to participate in the 12-hour race in Sebring.

The creation of Bizzarrini was predicted to have a successful racing career, but in 1964 the first races at Sebring, and then at Le Mans, turned out to be a failure due to problems with the gearbox and brakes. The most that the Iso Grifo A3 / C has achieved is first place in its class at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 1965, relations between Bizzarrini and Rivolta deteriorated. Bizzarrini considered the Iso Grifo A3 / C his personal project, so he decided to launch it into series production under the Grifo brand, but Rivolta retained the trademark rights. Since the cars had previously been assembled at the Prototipi Bizzarrini factory in Livorno, Bizzarrini simply renamed the model Bizzarrini 5300 GT.

At the same time, Iso Rivolta released its Iso Grifo variant using the same platform and engine, but combined with a slightly modified body from Bertone. Thus, in 1965-1969. in Italy, under different brands, two related cars of the Bizzarrini design were produced.

Although Giugiaro was responsible for the styling of the Bizzarrini 5300 GT, the bodies were made from aluminum by Piero Drogo in Modena and later by Carrozzeria BBM. The extremely low and streamlined supercar body with a sloping roof and wavy waistline is still considered the standard of grace.

Details such as air intakes in the front and rear fenders, ventilation slots instead of a radiator grill and plastic caps on the headlights, Bizzarrini has already used in the famous Ferrari 250 GTO.
