@falling-last-stardust its so sad. I personally LOVE the tv series, all 8 seasons of them. Bad influence is always going to be there but you know what? I got a friend of mine to watch all httyd material in chronological order. She absolutely adored rtte and can't wait to watch the last few movies. So no matter how much negativity surrounds it in here, there still are people who love it. Can you believe there are people who don't know the tv series even exist? Insane!
It’s good that your friend loves the show! :)
I don’t mind if people dislike the show as I understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and yes there are issues present which people will be unhappy about. They have the right to voice out their criticisms if they want, just like how some of us who found issues with HTTYD3 have the right to voice out our dissatisfaction as well.
The reason why I posted that is not because I disagree with other people’s opinions about the show, but because of misinformation being passed around in the name of the official authorities (e.g. claiming that Dean DeBlois has stated that RTTE is not canon even though he has mentioned several times in interviews that it is). Presenting your opinion is one thing, but to present misleading facts and claiming that it’s from Dreamworks themselves is just outright BS and I will not hesitate to call anyone out on that if they do not provide concrete evidence for their statements.
And I’m not surprised that there are not that many people who have heard of the TV series, as the general audience are mainly casual fans rather than hardcore ones who will gobble up any product released. Plus the TV series didn’t even get marketed much compared to the movies, and it is usually like that for other franchises too whereby the movies are more well known than the TV series and other spinoffs that are not on the big screen. This is why even though the TV series heavily references the movies, sadly the movies won’t provide much for the TV series fans, since it is assumed that those who watch the TV series will know the movies, but not the other way around.
In addition, HTTYD is not the only franchise that does this. Marvel does it as well with their TV series too, which is why you won’t see TV characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones or events that happened in the TV series appearing or being referenced in their movies, as not everyone in audience watches the TV series and will get the references. You basically don’t want to end up providing a Continuity Lockout (check this article on TVTropes as I cannot post the link here) for the general audience, hence it’s understandable why the TV characters would not appear in the movies.
However, that doesn’t mean that the TV series isn’t canon or that the events in there did not happen. They can still put in subtle references that the TV fans can understand, but does not alienate the casual audience either. Examples include the Fireworms (which made their first appearance in the TV series) seen in the Hidden World, as well as Hiccup’s stuffed toy first seen in Breakneck Bog appearing in both HTTYD2 and HTTYD3. There was even a subtle reference to Viggo in HTTYD3 if you listen closely to Hiccup and Eret’s conversation at the beginning when they were still in Berk (Hiccup’s line ”We’ve dealt with his kind before” in response to Eret’s description of Grimmel being a mind player).
And I know we might be going a bit off topic here, but I am tired of the usual excuse from “antis” that the show is not consistent with the movies as justification for it not being canon. I am fine with other reasons but this is the one that I will not personally accept. Well newsflash! All works of fiction have inconsistencies and I bet there is no such work that is 100% consistent, since all authors are only human who make mistakes. This is summed up well with this tweet by Richard Hamilton below.
Well known franchises like Star Wars and Harry Potter have inconsistencies and contradictions (*coughs*Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts*coughs*). Even the HTTYD movies have inconsistencies among themselves (if you ignore the TV series altogether) and so do the book series. Furthermore, the inconsistencies in HTTYD are relatively tame compared to others I have seen in other franchises, and they can still be easily reconciled with movie canon through interpretations and headcanons. I for one am at least glad that it’s not as bad as The Legend of Zelda or Kingdom Hearts series which can literally give you a headache.
