Any little floating exclamations in the drawings of Mal... are actually there! That's not just an artistic representation. It's real. People can see them. That's how they express emotions and speak

Breaking the laws of nature comes very naturally to him I fear.

And if you spend too much time with Mal... you may start emoting via incomprehensible floating punctuation, too. Sorry not sorry :P

Sorry my first time drawing him was for this stupid lil comic TvT. I hope it's not too out of character.

Sometimes Creators manipulate the world around them without realizing, especially those that aren't quite so controlled or aware of their surroundings, like Mal. They didn't mean to make those exclamation points appear, but that's what makes sense to them so it just kind of... happens.

Also since Mal doesn't have a face, they need to do some things a bit different. Though their emotional expression mostly relies on body language and their one weird eyebrow thing, they have learned that more direct expressions (emoticon speech bubbles, question/exclamation marks) can help them get that across. People still have trouble understanding him sometimes, though, and sometimes even Mal doesn't know what he's feeling.

The facelessness is also completely out of his control, so he can get a bit defensive about it, or more so his workarounds for expression/function because of it.
