Redemption Round 3 - Match 31
Cracked Foundation vs. Upon the Stair
Cracked Foundation
Upon the Stair
It's a battle of fucked up houses! Which of these statements has bigger House of Leaves energy? That's definitely one way you could vote in this poll! Cracked Foundation made it through with 128 votes, but can it stand up to Upon the Stair's astonishing 271 votes from RR2? (I don't remember enough from stats to say if Upon the Stair is a mathematical outlier but it definitely is colloquially)

*I HAD CAFFEINE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TWO MONTHS, SO BUCKLE UP! WE ARE GETTING SHIT DONE!*
Statement Summary: The statement giver is a cleaner who was hired to tidy up The House on Hilltop Road. It’s the new house built by Ivo Lensik, not the original. She has trouble remembering her initial reaction to the place. There were only small things out of place at first. The lights were dim, the air was cold, and the dust covers on the new furniture kept fluttering of their own accord. The place was only a bit dusty. Through the window in the kitchen, she saw a tree outside with eight branches that seemed to reach out. She had a vision of herself going outside to stand before it and let it grab her, but did not do that and moved on. The rustles and shadows weren’t right. There were sounds of things shifting and turning around often made her question if things were where they had been before. When she was preparing to leave, she realized she had missed a cupboard under the stairs. She decided to peek inside. The door handle felt warm. Inside were stairs leading down to a basement that had never been mentioned. She went down hesitantly to see if she needed to clean down there. It was even warmer in the basement and cobwebs were everywhere. The place was not in a state where she’d be expected to clean. There was a crack all through the floor and so dark. Eight eyes look up at her. Arms reached out. She woke up in a chair and quickly left. However, time is wrong. The date that she went to the house should have been two weeks ago but now it is tomorrow. Her friends barely recognize her. Things are missing. She doesn’t know who these people interviewing her are.
Who Did It: The Web, but snippets of others like the Dark or the Spiral, or even the Stranger
Spooky Rating: 8/10, well now I just have more questions
Archives Drama: Martin found the statement and gave to Jon because he has an interest in the developing narrative of Hilltop Road. It makes little sense in context because the statement giver doesn’t seem to exist. The House doesn’t even have an owner. He wants to go check it in person but he knows that would be unsafe. Tim comes in. They gripe at each other. Tim sounds absolutely miserable and Jon makes a concerted effort not to compel him. He refuses to talk while the tape recorder is on. So Jon asks what he thinks is listening. Tim gets mad, references the Eye and Elias vaguely, but seems done with the whole ordeal. However, Jon doesn’t think either are listening through them (though he views Elias to be the more likely of the two). The Archivist refuses to explain why he keeps the recorders on, but he admits he knows about Tim’s brother. He also knew Tim would be coming in on this specific day. Two telepathic bosses! Great! Jon explains how he doesn’t want to use his power on him and that he is still him. And Tim is forced to admit that Jon is the only who he can be sure hasn’t been replaced by a monster. Jon apologizes. Tim swears to destroy the circus and says that he knows where the ritual will take place. He’s been staking the wax museum out and saw that they stole the skin off of two dead people. George Icarus and Gertrude. Jon promises to include him in the plan. Later, Jon meets Daisy and Basira in the tunnels to show them the explosives. Daisy remarks on a shirt he got in China. Basira leaves to distract Elias. There’s nothing Elias has revealed about knowing the plan. They discuss it and destroying the wax museum. Jon expresses worry about Martin’s part in the plan, specifically his safety, but it all looks to be set up.
Stray Thoughts: Hilltop Road is a spider house again? Or is it a terrifying new combo? Just when I think I’ve got a handle on it things change again. I’m hoping there’s an actual field trip there in like Season 5. Did the spooky tree just regrow? Did someone plant a new apple box?? The conversation with Tim and Jon is rough because they both have valid reasons for acting the way they do while also being massive idiots. I guess that’s good writing but goddamnit got to a point where they forgave each other. What was on Jon’s shirt? Did Daisy smell Anatomy Student blood or something? I am 100% behind “on all levels except physical, I am a wolf” Daisy. Poor Martin. He’s got a rough time ahead. They all do.
