Mandibular Reconstruction for Hemifacial Microsomia This 8 years and six months old boy was born with right-sided hemifacial microsomia. He has severe right-sided mandibular hypoplasia with a missing ramus and condyle. There was also microtia of the right ear. He underwent reconstruction of the ramus and condyle using costochondral grafts with intact growth centers harvested at the time of the surgery. Care was taken to ensure full protection of the facial nerve throughout the surgery. It was explained to his parents that he would need distraction osteogenesis of the reconstructed ramus for full cosmetic and rehabilitation at 15 years of age. Mandibular Reconstruction for Odontogenic Keratocyst This young woman developed a progressively enlarging left-sided swelling of her mandible. She presented to our hospital for management. Imaging studies obtained at our hospital showed a radiolucent lesion and biopsies returned with the diagnosis of odontogenic keratocyst. Teeth overlying the lesion were extracted. Due to the size of the lesion, the mandibular bone underlying the lesion fractured when the lesion was being enucleated. She therefore underwent stabilization of the fracture with a titanium plate followed by reconstruction of the bony defect with rib grafts. Minister of Health, Government of Mauritius, Hon’ble Anil K. Gayan Inspects and Approves Facilities at Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital The Minister of Health and Quality of Life, Government of Mauritius, Hon’ble Anil K. Gayan visited Chennai to select hospitals to provide surgical care for Mauritanian citizens. He visited Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital and met with Dr SM Balaji for the purpose of inspecting the hospital for quality of care with respect to craniofacial surgery. Dr SM Balaji conducted a tour of the hospital facilities for the Hon’ble Minister, which included the two state of art operating theaters, inpatient wards, imaging facilities and diagnostic laboratories. The minister interacted with patients and after a thorough inspection gave his approval for the hospital to be selected as the referral center for treatment of patients with craniofacial deformities. The Minister also selected Dr SM Balaji as the head of the team of select surgical specialists who would provide surgical care on regular surgical missions to his nation. Craniofacial Surgery performed by World Leaders at Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital Dr SM Balaji organized the International Live Craniofacial Surgery Workshop at Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital in Chennai, India. World leaders in craniofacial surgical procedures demonstrated their surgical prowess during the four day workshop. Over 200 surgeons from around the world attended the live workshop, which was telecast live from the two operation theaters to the conference hall in the hospital. Dr. S. Ramesh, Pediatric Anesthesiologist, gave an overview regarding managing complications in children. Prof David Precious of Canada demonstrated a cleft lip and palate repair at the workshop. Prof Bodo Hoffmeister of Germany performed a bilateral ramus distractor placement while Prof GE Ghali performed a Le Fort III advancement surgery. Cranial Reconstruction and Cosmetic Rhinoplasty This young man was involved in a grievous road traffic accident. He was admitted with increased intracranial pressure and fractures to his mandible, bilateral maxillary bones and zygoma. There was also a left-sided orbital blow out fracture with displacement of lateral canthal ligament attachment. This had resulted in ptosis and lowering of the left eye. There was also a depression on the left side of his nose. He had undergone correction of the orbital blow out fracture with correct anatomical repositioning of the lateral canthal ligament. A section of his calvarium had been removed and buried in the abdominal rectus muscle to aid in decompression of the cranial vault. After complete stabilization following his previous surgery, he now presents for repositioning of his calvarial bone and cosmetic rhinoplasty. This was placed back over the calvarial defect and fixed with plates and Vicryl sutures. Cosmetic rhinoplasty with correction of the nasal depression was performed with a cartilage graft.
