An empty stomach and a full mind never lent towards sleep. Benjamin wasn’t really surprised by that anymore. Scratchy beds of hay probably didn’t help such a thing either, but again… Nothing new. At least this time it was dry.
Of course, Spider seemed inclined to differ. The scruffy black shepherd pup was stretched out, head across his boy’s chest, snoring right away. Eh……what do you know. You’re a dog, Ben scratched fondly behind his best friend’s fuzzy ears. His hand then went from the yearling pup to the tender bump on his own brunette head. A souvenir from a rather rough day. He’d have to get to the market early. That could provide a bigger window of swiping some food.
He glanced out across their humble home - the dingy loft of a barn, hardly in use anymore and with a leaky roof that could judge the quality of the night’s sleep in seconds flat. Dirty, dusty…..but it was home. And it had one heck of a view from the shutter doors. On nights like these, he could see the palace in the far distance so clearly - unhindered by the mountains and trees about them from so far up.
In fact, as time went by……he thought he’d seen some trace of movement down near the protective wall, but it had been so slight - so minuscule - that he dismissed it to the fog of sleep that fell at long last.
Tutu didn’t get much sleep that night. To be fair, by the time she had departed- or escaped- there wasn’t really much night left, but even so, she spent the remainder of it bundled in her cloak and tucked away in an out-of-the-way corner. Eventually she must have drifted off, though, because when she awoke, the sun was shining- and the town was bustling.
She jumped to her feet, eyes shining. How wonderful...!
She had never seen the city like this- or really, much at all. Only the occasional glimpses from carriage windows, or the distant faces and voices of the crowd when she was paraded across the balcony like a doll, or performed her dances for festivals and holidays. Her heart was fluttering wildly. Never once had she seen any of her subjects up close, and now here she was- among them!
Scrubbing the sleep from her eyes, she dusted off her cloak and skirts, checked her reflection in a nearby puddle to ensure that her wings and hair were well-hidden, and then, with a deep breath, stepped out into the marketplace.
