Reposted from @molecule_of_the_day (@get_regrann) - Cytarabine, also known as cytarabine arabinoside (ara-C) and sold under the trade name Cytosar-U, is a chemotherapy medication 💊 used to treat various forms of leukemia (blood cancer). These include acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Cytarabine also possesses antiviral 🦠 activity, and it has been used for the treatment of generalised herpesvirus infection. However, the major side effects of cytarabine are bone 🦴 marrow suppression and brain toxicity, making cytarabine not the most suitable choice as an antiviral drug. To prevent 🚫 the side effects and improve the therapeutic efficiency, various derivatives of these drugs (including amino acid, peptide, fatty acid and phosphates) have been evaluated, as well as different delivery systems. Ending the B cycle

A just finished a B cycle with methotrexate and cytarabine so we're waiting for the blood transfusions and mouth sores that seem to characterize our experience with these drugs.  He also has a sinus infection and RSV.  The respiratory infection freaks me out a little bit because I've read too many blogs where that sort of thing led to ICU visits and in one case caused the death of a little girl.  But, I'm trying not to think about that and to just focus on pumping A full of antioxidants, food, fluids, and rest.  Maybe he can kick this before his counts completely bottom out?

The good news is that he is still eating some.  Tonight we made runzas.  They're really simple, you take those triangle rolls from the grocery store and fill them with cooked ground beef, with a little bit of onions, chopped carrots and chopped celery and then cook then in the oven.  They were pretty easy to eat for A, soft and also gave him some good protein.  Then I made some cheesy cauliflower and a fruit salad.  He managed to eat everything.  We'll see when the mouth sores start and then it's on to a completely new set of recipes, some from this awesome book from the National Cancer Institute (http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/coping/eatinghints/page1), which I requested and they sent to us for free - - so so helpful and wonderful!
