amber's dragon age inquisition tips for a good playthrough

(spoiler warning, obvs)

●do "power for a price" war table operation as soon as you can

●flirt with EVERYONE (except blackwall if you don't intend to romance him, as you can get soft locked in his romance very early on)

●fade kiss solas if you're playing as an female elf and want to gain his friendship - doesn't lock you in a romance with him but it boosts approval

●side with the mages - optional, but in hushed whispers is a much more interesting mission than champions of the just (and the templars suck)

●do varric's personal quests and gain high enough approval with him to get the wicked grace cutscene

●support either cassandra or leliana to be the next divine - i don't think the game mentions it but if you don't, vivienne becomes the divine instead

●if you're not romancing iron bull or dorian, spend a few hours idling with just the two of them and they'll get together instead

●if you're not romancing blackwall or josephine, bringing blackwall and varric/sera out together may trigger some dialogue which hints at blackwall having feelings for josephine

●don't drink from the well of sorrows - morrigan wants it more, it seems problematic later on, and you have to fight a dragon

●sacrifice the dreadnought and save the chargers - iron bull appreciates it way more later on

●if you plan on leaving hawke in the fade, don't bring varric with you (or bring him and cassandra if you like angst)

●as long and tedious as it is, go down josephine's line for her personal mission instead of leliana's

●recruit cole

●romance someone before going to the winter palace, it'll be worth it at the end (actually bring them to the winter palace for this to work)

●always tell dorian about the meeting with his father, you're a dick if you don't

I, however understand her. I had a high approval with both Vivienne and sera without even trying to please them that much. You wouldn’t last a second with them.

You are just weak in front of free, opinionated, engaged and politically minded women.

on vivienne, sera, and cole: i find these dynamics really interesting for a bunch of reasons, as all three easily rank among my favorite inquisition characters and i find them very well-written and interesting, and i want to psychoanalyze a rather small detail that i really enjoy.

so, both sera and vivienne are among the handful of characters who refer to cole as an “it,” a “demon,” “thing,” etc. both have their own reasons for being inherently distrustful or disdainful of him— and while i love him very much yes, i definitely see why. but through dragging them along with him in my affectionately named “get-along-party,” i got certain interactions where this changes (if in little ways), which made me smile. more yapping as per usual beneath the cut.

prior to completing “subjected to his will”, asking sera about cole will prompt her to say that she doesn’t even want to talk about him, because “that thing is just wrong.” however, after completion of cole’s personal quest, and choosing to make him more human, her line changes to say (iirc) “still don’t give two squirts about him. he’s still just a wrong thing.”

the inquisitor then points out that she just referred to cole with he/him pronouns, prompting her to tell them to shut it— but the thing is, this persists in party banters she has with cole. and even when it’s repeatedly pointed out to her, often by cole himself sincerely thanking her for calling him “he” instead of “it,” she doesn’t make any attempts to correct herself, only groaning in frustration:

cole also has this line where he reads sera’s mind, which actually gives insight as to what’s going through her head when this happens:

sera seems to use he/him pronouns for cole on a subconscious level, and not even realize she’s doing it to a degree. however, in vivienne’s case, i can’t see it as an accident. vivienne is depicted as a character who is very in control; every word is deliberate, and she doesn’t seem the type to make such a slip-up without realizing it, or catching it before she can say it. while cole will react with surprise and be grateful when sera mistakenly uses his preferred pronouns, he doesn’t call vivienne out for deviating from her usual behavior towards him.

i’m fairly certain i encountered a line where she called him “he,” but i couldn’t manage to find it in the wiki. however, i did find several instances where she either called him by his name (rather than “demon” or “the inquisitor’s pet”), or even “darling,” which she will only call the inquisitor if they have a positive relationship with her.

she will also refer to him by name if he is injured or falls in combat:

my favorite party banter between them is this one, where it is made explicitly clear that yes, vivienne does actually care for cole in spite of her personal biases of him.

i think the reason cole doesn’t mention it when vivienne calls him by his name, or treats him like a person rather than a demon, is because he’s actually able to see inside her head. he knows she’s terrified, and he knows she cares deeply. he knows that she’s fought to get to where she is, and expressing vulnerability is difficult for her because it allows for people to hurt her, or gives her a weak point. he knows that she may not like him, but she does care— and so does sera. because while sera might not have any instances where she refers to him by name (the closest she gets is using “creepy” as a nickname of sorts, rather than calling him a thing) she still appears to warm up to him enough to use his pronouns, should he become more human.

it’s a very little thing, i know. however, i think it says a lot that vivienne and sera in particular do have their own ways of caring about cole, and treating him like a person instead of a demon. cole himself is receptive to it, and appreciative of the changes in their respective treatments of him, however little they are.
