How do you think the other robins would react to finding out about Jason being deaf? Or even Bruce? I feel like dick might be a bit overbearing at first despite everything that's happened between them. Would Jason end up getting frustrated with them over how they react? Or do you think one of them might actually be able to approach it much like Cass and maybe give Jay some reassurance of some kind? (Love your HC's btw!)
I just posted a reply to some of those questions. I’ve been at work all day so it took a while to reply.
Tim it’s kind of the most neutral after the initial shock. He works it to his advantage, learns more asl and he and Jason use it in the field when they do work together. It also prompts him to learn other sign languages besides American.
Dick is an over bearing ass but he really means well.
Damian is curious about how Jason trained his other senses to make up for his lack of hearing and is trying to learn the same things. He is a bit jealous Jason seems to be able to sense vibrations.
Steph has never been close to Jason, but she goes out of her way to learn d/Deaf culture but refuses to treat Jason any different.
Your deaf Jason headcanons are amazing. You are amazing. Plz, more. Dick, Tim, Bruce, Alfred reactions. Now i'm really invested in the story
Tim is the next to find out, but by pure accident. He and Jason end up caught up in a gang war together, and Jason gets hit in the back of the head with bat. His helmet has already taken a beating that night and the electrical components frizz out; his sound to text app goes down. He has no idea what is going on around him and it is terrifying. A second hit causes his lenses to go dark so he can’t /see/ and he can’t /hear/ and he should be trained to not panic but he can’t help it.
He’s punching and hitting anything he can, then finally someone is wrestling him and he’s so Panicked that they get him down, and his helmet and mask off. Tim is sitting on his chest, pinning him, mouth moving so fast Jason can’t read his lips, he can’t /process/, and he just chokes out “I can’t hear you.” And Tim stops talking.
And they sit there for a minute until Jason pushes him off and runs away. Tim finds him a week later, Jason has been avoiding him, and just signs ‘how long?’ And Jason answers, speaking because he won’t give Tim this, “a year.” And Tim just nods and nothing more.
Alfred finds out next, but Jason doesn’t know /how/. He just comes back to his apartment and Alfred is there, changing out his alarms for better models and setting up a doorbell system that alert Jason to visits. And Jason says nothing. Alfred doesn’t sign to him, just faces him when he talks, so Jason can see his lips, and it’s the first time Jason feels /normal/.
At this point, Jason is sure Bruce knows, but, Bruce isn’t confronting him. There is nothing, their interactions don’t change, but Jason noticed, when they fight side by side, Bruce has his back more. Like he’s making sure no one can get to Jason again.
.Dick has the biggest reaction when he finds out. He yells, or Jason thinks he does, and it’s furious Jason didn’t tell them. Didn’t ask for their help. Jason snaps at that, asks in ASL (just to be a jerk) if there is something /wrong/ with him now. Asks if he needs to be fixed and watches Dick stumble over his words.
He saw doctors, there is nothing they can do except give him an implant, which he doesn’t want. Unless Dick wants Jason to just go take another dip in the Lazarus Pit. Being able to hear in far more important than Jason’s sanity, right?
He avoids Dick after that, despite the apologies. He can’t stand anyone looking at him like he is broken or needs to be fixed.
Since he came back they always want to change him and Jason hates it. This is just something else to prove how different he is from the rest of the Family.
(deaf Jason) which bat brat notices it first? What do they do?
Besides Babs, Cassandra is the first to notice. She has been in Hong Kong and hasn’t been privy to all of Jason’s slow changes, so when she sees him next, his posture practically screams something is wrong. It isn’t her place to ask, though, she and Jason have never been close, but they are still siblings so she is concerned.
A concerned Cass ends up stalking Jason, trying to figure out what is wrong. She follows him all the way back to his current apartment, something that is more than just a place to crash. She watches as he silently goes about his routine and starts cooking, then going over to work on something else.Jason is obviously distracted by something, doesn’t notice when his food starts to burn and smoke until his alarm goes off.
But it isn’t an alarm Cass is used to. There is no noise. Lights just suddenly start flashing in the apartment and Jason is running back to the kitchen and Cass doesn’t understand. Because the apartment is far enough away from other people that a fire alarm wouldn’t be heard by neighbors. Why does Jason have lights instead, which is /noticeable/ from the street? That doesn’t seem like something Jason would want.
So she researches, finds out what those types of alarms are used for. When she finds out people who cannot hear use them, everything clicks into place.
She doesn’t confront him, because if he isn’t telling anyone, he has his reasons. But she worms her way into working with him on different cases while she is in Gotham. She signs to him instead of talking, and at first he is surprised, but then he seems to remember she doesn’t speak much, and ends up hesitantly signing back to her.
She never reveals to him she knows he can no longer hear, but Jason slowly realizes she does know. They don’t talk about it, but they talk about so many other things and slowly start to bond. They teach each other new signs, and Jason feels strangely honored when Cass gives him a sign name.
When Cass has to go back to Hong Kong, they exchange numbers and Skype information, and end up doing video calls with each other and having long chats into the nights without opening their mouths at all.
loved the deaf jason headcanon, please, tell us more
Being Deaf isn’t what he thought it would be. The world isn’t suddenly silent, but he wishes it was because it would be easier. Most of the time, it’s just like a white noise, a dull humming that it takes him ages to realize is the blood in his ears. Sometimes he will randomly hear a high pitched whine, inside his head.
But the worst is when Jason is just waking up and he can imagine he can hear still, when he’s caught between dream and reality and he thinks he can hear birds chirping or cars outside, then he realizes he can’t and it hurts so much.
Jason stops talking unless it is needed, because he hates how his voice echoes in his head. It’s teasing him. He can feel himself talking but he can’t hear it. What if he mispronounce something and looks like an idiot? He convinced himself he comes off more intimidating if he doesn’t talk.
One day he noticed his sound to text app is better in his helmet and he back traced everything until he finds the tell tale signs that Oracle has been meddling in his files. And he knows she left the traces on purpose. He doesn’t know whether she /knows/ or if she just thinks he’s using the app just because, but she never mentions it. Tweaks happen every few weeks to make the app better.
Jason still struggles, but everytime there is an update it makes him feel better, because it is acknowledgement.
He isn’t as alone as he thought he was.
Deaf Jason??
Oh yeah, Deaf Jason.
A Jason who loses his hearing while on patrol, either from a nasty fight or explosion or a combination of it all, and when he wakes up after being knocked out, he realizes what has happened and he feels his stomach drop out.
A Jason who isn’t at all close to the rest of the Family and will be damned if he will let them know he was hurt, let alone he lost his hearing. He’s died, he can survive this.
So he goes MIA for a few weeks, not that anyone will really notice because he’s not close to them, and he rebuilds his helmet and domino mask to basically be live feed closed caption, so he always knows the noises going on around him. He trains himself to enhance his other senses and then he goes back out on the street.
No one knows. No one knows he can’t hear them, that words scroll the bottom of his vision so he can turn his back on the people who talk to him. No one knows why he waits a few beats to reply to them, it’s just Jason, being an asshole. He’s never really answered their calls before, so ignoring them now is no different.
No one knows how much Jason wants them to notice those little things. That he can only be so strong, that he is scared, and he can’t deal with this, that he can’t sleep at night because he’s afraid something will happen and he won’t wake up because he can’t hear it, but he can’t show weakness, he can’t let anyone close.
He has to survive.
