Wow this episode was such a roller coaster and yet so good I think this is now my favourite show, ever. The writing is so good.
So from the start my impression of DeWall’s “your face makes me want to do bad things” from Ginger like....does every baddie wanna fuck Rust? I mean, mood, but yeesh. Poor Rust is like a piece of meat to them, lol.
Ouch at the face Rust makes after DeWall totally strips him out as a bad person. This stuff really does cut him deeper than he wants to believe it does.
Said this in the previous episode, but Rust’s revenge against Ginger, wow uh. There’s a history there.
I need to gif this, but Marty and Rust walking up to LeDoux’s place in perfect sync was just. Sooooo good. Their legs move together and you can tell this is peak for the beginning of something great between them.
Man, THAT STORY THEY TOLD. THAT STORY. Just, where do I start?
I was saying to @tartpants as I watched that this show does a lot of great stuff with bad men, toxic masculinity. It’s very clear that even before they cause a murder they don’t intend to, both Marty and Rust are doing something wrong and they both know it, especially Rust, but they want to play the hero.
It’s telling that Rust makes Marty the main hero in the narrative ‘like Captain America’. He tells the story that will make everything right, for both of them. And it’s so calculated, but also has a strange kindness in it.
This makes so much sense as to how they grow closer together in this lie :’)
It’s so, so telling that Rust starts to adopt Marty’s ‘normal’ narrative after they tell that lie. It’s like he sees why this can be comfortable, lets Marty into his own world (I have my own thoughts about what this means for a change in their relationship, but maybe that’ll come out in my writing ;) ).
God, the part with Marty’s reflection on his daughter and the mistakes he made in not ‘changing’ was so beautiful and poignant. You can tell he really...wishes he had been a better man but is so lost as to how to do that. Sigh. The more I see of this show the more I like Marty.
On the other hand, lol @ Marty losing his hair and watching Rust walk away like “it’s not fair that he’s still hot” (also were they fucking at work...maybe so.... :P )
Equally as the LeDoux lie brough them together, I can almost see how it would tear them apart. As Rust realizes he was fooling himself into thinking the case was closed, he’d be furious at himself for falling into that comfortable narrative while kids were getting murdered. And their lie would seem all the more corrosive. I can’t wait to see what happened between them after that.
