Gendry freezes. His eyes leave the charging dead in front of him and turn upwards. Arya is alone on her stretch of the battlements and the dead are swarming towards her. She swings with her staff, the one he made her, and it’s not enough. There are too many. Arya dodges and then actually leaps onto a connecting roof.

His entire world crumbles in the second that Arya’s feet leave the solid stone and leap onto thatched covering. It’s less than a second, a fraction of a moment but it stretches out in his mind like an eternity compressed into a single second.

He loves her. He loves her with everything that he is, with every breath, every heartbeat, and now an army of the dead stands between them.

There’s a sound like a roar. It rips through the area. It shakes his bones. And only after Gendry has slammed his hammer through the dead that stand on the steps up to the battlements and stands at the top to find that Arya has disappeared into the fight again does he realize he made that sound.

Sansa fell onto the stone bench out back in the garden, shoes already kicked off as she rested on one palm and brought her champagne flute to her mouth with her other. 

Dickon stayed standing in front of her, hands stuffed in his pockets. It had been a long night filled with dancing and jokes, ridiculous schemes really, and he somehow still looked airbrush perfect. 

You don’t believe he’s real, Sam had once described him as. 

Looks and acts sometimes like he was in a frat, has a heart of gold though, Gilly had warned her. 

Sansa wasn’t sure what her sentence for him would be, yet. 

“You’re going to have to prove you’re real,” Dickon said to her. 

She arched a brow. “Excuse me?” 

“You know what I’ve heard about you leading up to this wedding? Perfect. Kind and whip-smart and beautiful as sin. How am I supposed to believe you’re real?” His smile was on that edge of charming and smug that unfortunately made Sansa’s heart flip in her chest. 

“You’ve met one of my ex-boyfriends tonight and know most of my family. You have to know I’m not perfect,” she replied. “And what about you? Successful hockey star Dickon Tarly. How am I supposed to believe you’re real?” 

He held out his hands, doing a little turn that Sansa couldn’t help herself from giggling about. When he stopped, the joke fell away and he shrugged. 

“I’m surface deep, nothing interesting.” He paused again, and Sansa didn’t know what she wanted to say so she didn’t say anything, and then after a beat Dickon made his way over to her side and sat beside her. “Perfect kid syndrome.” 

“What?” she asked, turning and looking at him. Up close he was perfect, too, no blemishes or marks to mar his skin. 

“Try to be perfect. Try not to cause problems,” he said. “Just wanted to make our parents proud so they’d be a little less stressed out, be a little kinder maybe in my case. Didn’t work, probably, but it left us with our own neurosis.” He brought a hand up to his jaw and ran a hand over it. “Or am I off base?” 

Sansa gulped. She thought about the way she used to sit in the window and watch her siblings play instead of joining in. The nights she did homework instead of going on wild adventures. The perfectly painted nails and smiles and… “No. You’re not off base,” she told him. 

Dickon reached out a hand to cover her own on the bench. There were no eyes here. No act to play. She let him anyway.

in honor of @anniebibananie‘s Rarepair Milestone Event, i feel like i gotta share my favorite Dickon/Sansa Modern Au headcanon...

so Dickon and Sansa meet in college through Jon, Robb, and Theon. and everyone thinks Dickon is a total fuckboy because he’s The Hot Tarly™, and he’s in a frat, and is a business major, and wears polos and Sperrys, and can bench press a small equine, and has that hair and that face and that ass and looks like T H A T.

so our girl Sansa is out partying one weekend and looking to get laid just to blow off some steam because, ya know, life and college and all that. so she and Margaery end up at Dickon’s frat house and (thanks to Marge’s excellent wing woman skills) she ends up in Dickon’s room and they get busy.

after they’re done Dickon is like “hey, sorry if I wasn’t all that great.” (which, Sansa will admit, it wasn’t all that great). and then he says “but it’s just that that was my first time.” and the first thing out of Sansa’s mouth is “ooohhh okay! well that’s fucking adorable... just let me know when you wanna go again then!”

and then she’s like: “wait... oh SHIT... am I?... ohmyGOD... I AM THE FUCKBOY!!!”

then at brunch with Sam, Jon, Robb and Theon the next morning she waits until they have all taken huge gulps of what they refer to as “breakfast beer” and says “hey Sam, I climbed your little bro like a tree last night and took his v-card while I was at it!” just to watch them choke while she and Margaery high five because this time Sansa is definitely the fuckboy.
